Childhood in the Kumeu-Huapai district oral history project

Description: Interviews with a number of people who spent their childhood in this rural district north west of Auckland City during the 1910s and 1920s. The area was long used as a portage by Maori between the Kaipara and Waitemata harbours. Pakeha initially settled during the mid to late 1800s and, after forest and gum clearance, the area was slowly developed into dairy farms. In 1915 nearly 5000 acres of scrubland at Kumeu North (renamed Huapai) were subdivided as orchards, mixed farms and weekend homes. There was an influx of new residents (including weekend only residents) following this. Huapai School opened in 1919. Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. He gives a full description of events during the voyage and fellow passengers. He came out again by the ship `City of Auckland'. The diary continues with an account of their first months in the Waikato up to September 1871. Description: Papers include holograph extracts from Speedy's diary of 1863 giving details of skirmishes in Waiuku area; letters to Speedy in his official capacity; letters to Sarah from her husband and relatives 1863-1890; letters from Sarah to her children 1890-1894; marriage certificate for Sarah and James 1835; miscellaneous letters to members of the Speedy family; mss list of birth dates for family members; envelope addressed to J H Jerram in Auckland (one of Speedy's daughters became a Mrs Jerram); and two photographs, one of the family home at Fairlea, Waiuku, and the other possibly of Major Speedy, ca 1860s James Speedy served as an officer in the British Army in India. He married Sarah Squire in Calcutta in 1835. By the 1850s the family had moved to NZ and settled in the Waiuku area. Major Speedy was Resident Magistrate and Native Agent for the Mauku, Waiuku and Pukekohe districts during the wars of the 1860s.
