Description: Most of the reminiscences describe life at Whangarei where her husband was mainly engaged in the flax industry. He also spent some time mining and working as a builder at Thames. Elizabeth recalls Hone Heke's sacking of Kororakea in 1845 and subsequent evacuation of Whangarei settlers to Auckland. The Holmans eventually returned to Whangarei where Henry operated a flax mill until the family moved to the Thames goldfields in 1867. A revival of the flax industry saw them once again return to Whangarei. They retired to Auckland where Henry died in 1894 Relationship complexity - Holograph with ms annotations at MS-Papers-3881 Mrs Holman first came out to Hokianga in 1840. In 1841 she married Henry Charles Holman at Kororareka, and they spent some time at the Bay of Islands, and in Auckland where Henry was appointed Superintendent of Public Works. Description: (i) Interview with Mrs Janet Chan born in Sarng Seng, Guangzhou (Canton), China, in 1929. Describes growing up in China and meeting her husband, Stanley Young Chan who emigrated to New Zealand from China at age of seven and had returned to China to study Chinese. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1939 and helped her husband run his fruit and vegetable shop in Mt Albert, Auckland for 12 years. She describes living among the Chinese community and learning English. In 1945 she moved to Thames where her husband had aquired what became known as SYC Vineyards where they produced wine and table grapes. In the 1970s they retired to Auckland. Mrs Chan describes her life in Thames and retirement in Auckland and compares life in New Zealand with China. (ii) Interview with Mrs Yvonne Wong (daughter of Janet Chan) Yvonne Wong was born in Harkee Village, Canton, 1936 and came to New ealand with her parents in 1939. She describes life living in her parents fruit and vegetable shop in Mt Eden, Auckland and from 1945 working on her parent's vineyard in Thames. In 1960 she married Fred Wong who owned a fruit and vegetable shop in Taihape. She describes her life in Taihape and her sons becoming managers of New World supermarkets in Taihape and Palmerston North. Description: The microfilm comprises six journals (1852-1867), copy of typescript letter (1840) and `Pilgrimage to Jerusalem' by Luce (7-13 Oct 1841) The journals are described as private journals; vols 1-4 covering 1852 to 1863 and Luce's service including Portsmouth, Karatch Bay, Malta, Cape Coast, Sierra Leone and Dahomey Luce writes of his service in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific in volumes 5 and 6. Volume 5 (1864-1866) includes an index of contents, notes and clippings and detailed descriptions of the `Esk' being at Auckland, going to Tauranga, the East Coast and Poverty Bay, Wellington, New Hebrides, Fiji and Sydney, with descriptions of cattle trade, a journey to Wanganui. Also includes lists of letters written and sent, and received, readable books in the ship's library and of `Officers and dates of dining with me'. Volume 6 (1866-1867), which is described as a very rough notebook, includes a photograph of Luce (1865) and clippings and covers the `Esk' being in Auckland, Thames, Norfolk Island, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Fiji, Tonga and the Friendly Islands. Includes description of a trip round and up the Waikato River and a cruise from Thames to Wellington. Source of title - Supplied Luce served with the Royal Navy from 1840; these journals cover the period 1852 to 1867 and include time served on the `Esk' in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Description: The major account within the notebook is 'Orreri' [sic] which gives a lively description of two years living as a timber labourer at Orere on the Hauraki Gulf, after he had jumped ship in Auckland (pp 26-106). Letters refer to the dull state of business and politics in Auckland, the Thames gold rush, Daniel's purchase of land from the Waikato Maori and family matters. Description: Reminiscences of the Bay of Islands, 1830s-1840s; letter from Fairburn's sister, Esther Hickson (1908); and extract on Hongi Hika from Carleton's life of Henry Williams. Records an early amputation of an infected leg carried out by William Williams, assisted by E T Fairburn, at Paihia, on a Mr Gray, a blacksmith, ca 1832. Mention of "first game of cricket in New Zealand" at Paihia, ca 1832 or 1833. Haslam family : Family papers

Description: The papers chiefly comprise letters to the Haslam family in England from Frederick, Lewis, Sarah Ann and Thomas Self. They include descriptions of daily life in Auckland, 1863-1883, Frederick's service in the Auckland militia, 1863-1864 and a visit by Thomas to the Thames gold field in 1870. Also a log kept by Frederick aboard the `Silver Eagle' on the voyage to New Zealand, 1862-1863. Typed transcripts of the letters and log are also included. Papers accompanied by a genealogical chart of the Haslam family dated 1982. Source of title - supplied title Sarah Ann Haslam and her brother Frederick emigrated to Auckland from England in 1862 aboard the `Silver Eagle'. Their brother Lewis joined them in 1865 but was drowned the following year when the `Kiwi' was lost with all hands off the New Zealand coast. In 1863 Sarah Ann married Thomas Self who had been a fellow passenger aboard the `Silver Eagle'. Frederick served with the Auckland militia during 1863-64 and was involved in action against Maori forces in the vicinity of Papakura and Drury in South Auckland. Unable to find suitable employment in New Zealand he returned to England in 1867. Quantity: 10 folder(s). 0.10 Linear Metres.
