Mathis, Cory, 1985- :Good for another pull? [2013]

Date: 2013

From: Various artists :[Entries in the Young Cartoonist Award. 2013]

Description: Shows Prime Minister John Key scaling Auckland's Sky Tower, which functions as a giant gambling machine. Key pulls the Casino's lever while coins flow out in a steady stream. Refers to controversy surrounding a proposal by Sky City Casinos to build a national convention centre in Auckland in return for being allowed to have more pokie (gaming) machines. The deal will require a law change and has led to allegations by opponents that it will result in more cases of problem gambling. The cartoonist has also noted that 'King Kong styles leaped to mind' Cory Mathis was the winner of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and the Listener's Young Cartoonist Competition in 2013. A photo-mechanical print of this cartoon as well as preparatory drawings are available and show the development of the Sky Tower and caricatures of John Key, see A-460-020-1/4. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
