Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Postcards, chiefly of Australia, including Tasmania, Adelaide, Queensland, New South Wales, with several showing various tin mines in Tasmania. There is a section of New Zealand postcards in the middle of the album, many taken by an Australian photographic company "Charles H Kerry & Co", labelled "Series 53. Hot Lakes District, New Zealand". These images are tinted, and include views of the Huka Falls, the Pink and White Terraces, Waiotapu, Ohinemutu, Whakarewarewa, Lakes Waikaremoana and Taupo, and the Aratiatia Rapids. The NZ images also include views of the Mount Cook region of the South Island, including Franz Josef Glacier, Hooker Glacier, Mounts Darwin, Sefton and Cook, and Lakes Te Anau and Wakatipu. Description: There are three general groups of images in this album. The first records a holiday to the Volcanic Plateau, taken by a group of men over Christmas 1912, where they climbed Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro. The story starts with the group outside the 14 miles stables where they hired a wagon to transport them into the mountains. The route they took was from the north eastern side of Ruapehu to the Waihohonu Hut situated between Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. They climbed Te Heu Heu Peak and then trekked across the snow to the Crater Lake returning to Waihohonu Hut and a dip in the Waihohonu Stream. The next day they set out for Mounts Ngarauhoe and Tongariro. They paused at the source of the northern branch of the Waihohonu Stream on their way to climb to the crater of Ngarauhoe. By the end of the day they reached the Ketetahi Hut on the northern slopes of Tongariro near the Ketetahi Springs. The next day they tramped out via Lake Rotoaira to Tokaanu where they set up camp on the shores of Lake Taupo. The Party then moved north to Wairakei and Rotorua taking in stops at the Huka falls and the Aratiatia Rapids. From Rotorua they returned to Wellington by train. The next group records a hunting trip into what is today the Haurangi State Forest Park in the south eastern Wairarapa in February 1913. There are views of the camp with Girdlestone's mother and another woman visiting. The area depicted is in the valley of the Turanganui River and the surrounding hills. Images include native forest views, a forest fire, hunting pigs with dogs, riding horses, the corpses of wild pigs, groves of Karaka trees, and partly cleared land. The third group of images are of social and sporting events associated with two houses. In both cases the sport depicted is men and women playing tennis. Other images include a child driving a peddle car, views of the "Devon" wrecked on the rocks at Pencarrow Head 25th of August 1913, and women and children with horses. The last image in the album is that of a young woman writing as she holds a telephone reciever to her ear. Quantity: 1 album(s).

Description: Views around the Taupo Tongariro area, including Mounts Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, Lake Taupo and Wairakei. There is one image of the Maori interior of Tom Ryan's whare, one of the Terraces Hotel at Lake Taupo, and others of various buildings at the Spa Hotel (Taupo), including the interior of the dining room. This building was the meeting house Te Tiki o Tamamutu, purchased by John Joshua (proprietor of the Spa Hotel) for use as a smoking room and dining room for the hotel guests. Several images show unidentified Maori women in posed groups, or working with flax, and in one case a woman using a treadle sewing machine. An unidentified man is seen, in several images, fishing at pools below the Aratiatia Rapids. Photographs taken by Auckland Star photographers around the turn of the 19th-20th century. Description: Photographs of large groups of people taken on tours run by New Zealand Railways, using rail and road transport. The album covers various trips taken by large groups of unidentified people, mostly in the North Island, and only as far south as Tokaanu and the Whanganui River. Very few of the photographs have captions, but several are labelled "Commerce trip", and include images of farming, ploughing, stock sales yards, and a large group of men picnicking around a hangi (p. 14). Description: Album of photographs taken around the Taupo District. Many are contacts from 35mm film; some are prints, taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1955 and 1965. Most of the images are indicative of John Salmon's interest in photography. Examples can be seen in the series of images taken in various lights on the Taupo Golf Links including on misty mornings, the "Picket fence" of fishermen standing at the mouth of the Waitahanui River Mouth on Lake Taupo, a series showing Pohutu Geyser playing, views of the Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls, and views of Mission Bay where he spent camping holidays. Three views show Maori ramparts on Motutaiko Island (Lake Taupo), several show dwellings at Waihi, and one shows a group of Maori children in a hot pool at Whakarewarewa. Description: Views of New Zealand taken by Sir Edmund Oswald Teale, who visited New Zealand to attend a meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science in Dunedin between December 1903 and January 1904. Images include a number showing geological formation along the route between Napier and Taupo; images of hot springs and mud pools, and the Aratiatia Rapids; Napier and Wellington. Views of the South Island include many in the Mount Cook region, and show various glaciers, including the Tasman Glacier, Hochstetter Glacier, and the Hooker Glacier; geological aspects of moraines, crevasses and moulins associated with glaciers; Lake Pukaki; alpine flowers in the Tasman Valley; a carriage and horses near the Hermitage, with Mount Sefton visible behind; the Mataura River and Bluff. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River.
