Description: A circus herald advertising the Fitzgerald Brothers' Circus. Recto shows portrait illustrations of the two Fitzgerald Brothers at the top corners, and below is a large scene showing many acts going on in the Big Top. Performers included: The Zenobia Brothers (globe on a tightrope), Gilleno (musical clown), dog show introduced by Manzoni (from the Folies Bergeres), Mdemoiselle Onra (tightrope), Miss Beryl Loraine (contortionist and dancer), Eric and Reano (aerial trapeze comedians), The Flying Meteors, Benato the Clown, The Marottos (horizontal bar) Contains a warning that any swindlers, gamblers, fakirs making false claims and undermining the circus affidavits, will be arrested if found on the grounds. Description: Shows arrangement of text and list of performers including Marguerite [Jandaschewsky] (daring lady rider), Miss Mena Val (lady stock whip cracker), the 3 Altons (troupe of Chinese acrobats), Miss Ashton (lady gymnast), Miss Alton (the boneless wonder), the Merry Denos (laughing clowns), Frank Carl (bounding jockey and 3-horse rider), Miss Valdare (lady trick cyclist). The Brass Band is headed by bandmaster J Maguire. The whole show under the direction of Mrs F. J. Barton. Description: Poster advertising the 1921 tour by the Australian circus company, St Leon's Circus. Lists the following performers: Odessa Bros (triple horizontal bar), the beautiful Dolories (trapeze), Joey and Woolum, Maudie (mule), Ky-Yia Trio (dogs trained by "Jackeroo"), Prof Morris and his New Zealand and French mountain trained sheep and trained pigs, St Leon's acrobats, Master Mervyn King (boy rider), Odessa Sisters (aerial whirling stunts), Conchita (rider), Ray St Leon and his 4 flying steeds, Golda ("singing Venus on tight wire"), Gus St Leon (clown), Rentfrew statues, Madame Footrina; Algernon, Bertram & Reginald (comedy riding duo), Reuben (miniature horse). Mark St Leon writes (10 November 2007): "As with a lot of circus programs, family members may have performed in several different acts under other names. The St Leon family for this tour comprised the brothers Syl, Reg and Adrian and their sister Daisy (Mrs Alf Honey) and the Honeys' daughters, Golda, Doris ('Conchita'), Loreen and Florence. Ray St Leon was their cousin (and my great uncle). Golda was "Mdlle Golda" and the sisters Doris, Loreen and Florence were the 3 Odessa Sisters/Honey Trio. Alf Honey and his partner Frank Cherry were gymnasts, although the "Cherry" for this tour was probably not the Frank Cherry of the original act of 1908-09. 'Professor' Morris was an animal trainer. Master Mervyn King was an adopted/apprenticed boy of the St Leons who died recently at the age of 95. I recorded his life story as a circus man in my book 'The Silver Road'. Joey & Woolum was, I think, Syl and Adrian St Leon. Delories may have been either Golda or Doris. The Rentfrew Troupe/Bezantine Troupe were mostly the family. There is mention of Gus St Leon (father of Syl, Reg, Adrian and Daisy) but I doubt if he was on this tour. His brother Walter (father of Ray) was present for the early part of the tour and presented the war horse Romulus. You will find references to the Honey family in my Circus in 'Australia: The American Century' as this branch of the St Leon family later established itself in the USA". Description: Poster promoting a circus whose proprietors were Messrs Pedro and Cabot. The business manager was Charles Cabot and the treasurer Cecil Pedro. The touring manager was Joe Bruce, and the equestrian director William Tyler. The superintendent of canvas was Reg Stunt. An arrangement of text listing: The Flying Winskills (aerial acrobats) and Charlie Chaplin clown; Tyler's wonderful performing monkeys; a great troupe of performing ponies; the Great Tyler (the world's greatest Risley act); Bert Weston (balancer); the Aerial Delevants (three women); Pimpo (acrobatic talking clown); Val-de-Mare (trick cyclist); Rosie Rifle & Co. (world's greatest lady rifle shot supported by Wild West lariat spinners, lassoers and stock-whip experts); Lavigue Sisters (double wire act); Joey the laughing clown with dummy August; Bubs Winrow (juvenile acrobatic dancer and contortionist); La Belle Maisie (trapeze performer); Togo the Charleston horse; Nelson Brothers (jugglers); Tommy (miniature trick pony); Alice Wilton (lady bareback rider); silver band headed by Charles Ross. Description: Photographs and proof sheets of an acrobatic group called the Del Mars, Bernardi's (Jack Nightingall's) hypnotist show, domestic cats, men weightlifting, clowns, parties and other social events, a tramping and camping holiday, a trip to Hawke's Bay, Rotorua and the central North Island, yachts and yachting, views from a journey up the Wanganui River, airplanes, posters relating to the anti war/peace movement of about 1939-1945 and activists of the Wellington branch of the Fellowship of Conscientious Objectors printing leaflets in 1941. Related to these are a group of proof sheets recording a conscientious objectors social event at Mokoio Hall on 17 June 1946. There are also proof sheets of Carmen and some of her associates, and of performers at Carmen's nightclub "The Balcony" in Wellington. Two proof sheets have images of turned wooden bowls made up of different woods, and ornamental wooden boxes inlaid with different woods. These were made by Jack Nightingall while he was held in detention as a conscientious objector. Quantity: 82 b&w original photographic print(s).
