Description: Journal records his work cutting and forming tracks between Canterbury and the West Coast; meeting with groups of Maori and prospectors; a visit to John Henry Whitcombe's grave at the Taramakau River (he had been drowned on a similar expedition in May 1863) and the wet weather. There is mention of a Maori guide, Jack Tainui, re-burying Whitcombe and marking the grave with two paddles (page 28). Farmer and gold prospector who arrived from Australia to farm in 1860. Leader of a working party contracted by the Canterbury Provincial Government to cut a track to the West Coast, via the Hurunui Plains, Harper Pass and Lake Brunner to the Grey River mouth. Howitt, together with two other members of his party, Robert Little and Henry Miller, disappeared on Lake Brunner on 27 Jun 1863 (the journal ends 20 Jun). Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Foxley Norris album

Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River.
