Description: View from the top of the Terrace looking down over Te Aro Flat with Mount Victoria in the distance. Manners Street can clearly be seen in the bottom left of the picture, leading to the Wesleyan Chapel on the right-hand side of the road. Wellington Harbour can be seen on the left of the view, with ships dotted in the harbour The reference to 'Captain Sharpe' should correctly be Captain Sharp. Description: View looking north-east along Wellington's south coast from above Ohiro Bay, past Island Bay and towards the Harbour entrance. In the foreground, amongst bush and low scrub is a party of six European men, two leading on horseback, one with two dogs. Brees is probably depicting himself and his group of surveyors Original of no 45 (with the same title) in Brees' "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand". The engraved version has a single man with a dog in a different position in the foreground, and a flock of sheep. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - title faintly inscribed in capitals in brown watercolour: View of Port Nicholson [fr]om the range of hills west of the Ohiro Valley. Description: Photocopy of elaborately drawn coloured manuscript map by W.H. Burnand inserted in his copy of the New Zealand Journal, v.5, p. 312, 1845. Includes much text on map e.g. 'The land round this lagoon swampy', "Beautiful valley'. Gives Ahururi Harbour another name, Hauriru, describing 'at the mouth of the river are two islands, little else than sand, no wood or water'. Data from Capt. Rhodes report 1841, and from Col. Wakefield, Mr Tiffen and Capt. Kettle. Shows routes taken by Stokes and Harrison, from Wellington up the East Coast to Hawkes Bay. Scale out of proportion. Note on verso of original : Ahuriri see 5th March 1853 Gaz - see description of Ahuriri in the Nov. 12, 57 NZ Gazette p.801. Description: A view along a beach (now Thorndon Quay) looking towards Kaiwharawhara and Wadestown, with the road to to Wadestown shown winding up the hill in the background. There are houses at the beachfront on the left, mostly at the top of the low hill above the beach. Major Baker's house appears as a roof only, with a tree in front of it. A couple on horseback is in the foreground and a Maori man, woman and child stand at the left. The Library holds a photographic copy of the privately-owned watercolour original for this engraving, painted between 1842 and 1845 (negative 138581 1/2). The watercolour has no Maori group on the left but is otherwise very similar to the engraving Quantity: 1 colour art print(s).
