Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Sheila Hogben's album of holiday photographs. The first holiday taken during the Christmas break, 1939-1940, included six girls camping at Waiau Pa, Manukau Harbour. The six girls with their bicycles ready to leave on their trip. Shots of the girls at their camp with two men, Charlie and Arthur. The rest of the photographs are mainly shots of the girls at tennis, at the beach, and in the pastoral landscape of the farm where they were camping. The second holiday was a tour of Northland made in January 1941. This time a group of four girls set out with their bicycles loaded down with camping gear. They also travelled by hitching rides on trucks and they are seen on their first lift on the back of a truck with their bicycles. Group photographs in bathing togs on the beach at Tikinui. Two girls swimming with two men in Three Chain Lake. The girls with the Meredith family, Glink's Gully. In Trounson Park Kauri Reserve and Waipoua Forest. Swimming at Waimamaku. Description: Shows the giant kauri tree Tane Mahuta in the centre, in a bush setting. It is the one tourists are taken to see and a notice at the foot of it says: This tree is 43 feet in girth + 42 feet to the first branch. Description: Shows an abstract interpretation of Tane Mahuta within surrounding forest. The giant kauri stands imposingly at the front, represented in black and other dark colours, with the texture, light and shadow of the forest represented by the various fabrics used Steven regarded this work as a collaboration with the Maori artist Heni Sherratt, who designed the patterned fabric in the collage. The two met while Steven was teaching art to Maori children on the East Coast in the late 1940s. When she went to London in 1951 Steven was invited to participate in the Ascher Award at the Tate Gallery, and contributed this collage to the exhibiton. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - A.M. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet starts with a series of maps, a world political map, map of the sea floor showing the relationship of New Zealand with the various undersea mountain ridges etc., New Zealand physical, rainfall, and geological maps. Views of Cape Maria van Diemen and Rangitoto nearing New Zealand on board ship. Auckland Harbour from the air; Auckland from Devonport; Ninety-Mile Beach; country near Waipoua Forest, the road into the forest, and Tane Mahuta, on the way to Kaipara; Kaihu River and coastal country between Trounson's Forest and Waihue; and Omamari beach and stream. The last five views show aspects of Holmridge farm owned by Mr Williams' friends Ruth and Vernon Woods.
