New Zealand scenery album 2

Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge. Description: Album of newspaper and magazine cuttings, photographs, and prints of paintings in colour and black & white, mostly of Maori subjects, with some images of geographically interesting sites in New Zealand, including Mount Tongariro, Lake Waikaremoana, and the Waimangu Crater. The Maori material includes prints of paintings by Goldie, and prints of paintings of Maori by T. Ryan, some of which are copies of works by Goldie. There is a print of a painting by T. Ryan, showing Tomika Te Mutu, painting done from an original sketch by Horatio Gordon Robley. There are many publicity photographs of Maori, showing clothing, particularly cloaks, and showing various activities in Maori pa, including weaving, firelighting, poi dances, and waka poi. Also includes images of Maori waka on the Waikato River; 2 pages of Maori rock carvings, found in a cave shelter on the Kaingaroa Plains in 1926, and one on Maori god-sticks (Pou whakapakoko).

Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
