Taken by Neville Mosen circa 1936 to 1937, and possibly some taken by other unidentified photographer(s). Contains scenic views and views of the Club members on bush walks and skiing in Tongariro National Park, featuring Ruapehu, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and surrounding environs, the Pinnacles at Blue Bluffs, Ruapehu crater lake, Tama Lakes, The Chateau, Whakapapa glacier, Karioi Lakes, Mangawhero River and various tramping huts. Bruce Davis, an amateur photographer who lived in Raetihi is identified. Also includes views of Raetihi township and Horopito locality, Napier, Tauranga (rail bridge and The Strand), and Ngauruhoe erupting (possibly 1937 eruption). Also includes views of Tom Parker posing with the fountain he gifted to Napier in 1936 and scenes of a parade and bonfire in Raetihi to mark the coronation of King George VI in 1937. Description: Mounted images with annotations from Albert Armitage Salmon's 1936-1937 trip to New Zealand. The images follow the route of Salmon and his companions' travels tramping and travelling from Franz Josepf Glacier to various locations in the North Island. Photographs taken by Salmon. - The photographs show aerial images of the South Island including Franz Josef Glacier and snowfields, Fox Glacier and nearby mountains and bush, and a series of images of Bert Salmon and Mary Hansen on the ice at Fox Glacier. Description: The images record three separate events: 1. Leslie Verry's trip to Europe in 1939 as the world prepared for war. 2. The New Zealand Centennial celebrations at Waitangi in 1940. 3. A climbing trip to Tongariro National Park, easter, 1940. In relation to the Second World War, this album is interesting in that it has several photographs showing mobilisation in Holland, and troops on the move in Utrecht and the Hague following the Italian invasion of Albania in April 1939. It also has photographs taken in Kassa (Hungary) after the partition of Czechoslovakia. The album covers various trips taken by large groups of unidentified people, mostly in the North Island, and only as far south as Tokaanu and the Whanganui River. Re the group located at the Whakapapa Hut and the date of this. Firstly the women are wearing clothes and headgear that date from styles current in the late 1920s-early 1930s (ca 1926-1932). Secondly, a group of mainly women lined up with their cameras, are identified as ready to take photographs of Lady Fergusson departing [the Chateaux] for Taupo. Description: Group of photographs showing the activities of a group of people based at the Whakapapa Hut, Mount Ruapehu, ca 1930. Many of these photographs were taken by Leo L White. This was a large hut accomodating 24 people and supplied with a stove and a sink, making it luxurious in the terms of the times - hence its unofficial name "Pansey Palace." Re the group located at the Whakapapa Hut and the date of this. Firstly the women are wearing clothes and headgear that date from styles current in the late 1920s-early 1930s (ca 1926-1932). Secondly, a group of mainly women lined up with their cameras, are identified as ready to take photographs of Lady Fergusson departing [the Chateaux] for Taupo.
