Description: Volume is a handwritten and bound history of Taumarunui written in Indian ink, which includes illustrations in oils and ink, and a panorama photograph of Taumarunui town taken by S C Smith. Text covers the period 1850-1925 and includes the early history of local Maori; settler Alexander Bell and his wife Katarina; Taumarunui railway and the development of the first township. Godber album 10

Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining. Some prints in this collection have notes on the back in a consistant, neat handwriting. In three cases these are signed E N Webster, who advises that he arrived in Wellington 5 February 1918, and left 15 June 1922. During this period, as well as photographing Wellington and district, he travelled on holiday to New Zealand cities and tourist destinations. The photographs were taken between 1919 and 1921 judging from the prints that have dates. His second name was Norman, and this is the name he used to sign letters on postcards sent from Christchurch in 1919 to his mother, and a friend called May. There is also a note attached to an illustration of Ben Lomond in the collection on which he signs himself Norman Webster. Information on postcards indicate that he came from Australia, and in 1916 lived at Nambour, Queensland. Description: Cadastral maps of rural lands for sale or lease to discharged soldiers. The larger map is of Sections 1 to 9, some numbers having been added in pencil, of Block 3 of the Piopiotea Survey District, adjacent to Ohira South and including the Mangarautawhiri and Pungapunga Streams and a small loop of the Wanganui River. This base map has numbered sections, including acreages, which have been outlined and include owners' names and dates handwritten in each section. The second map is of Section 15, Block XII of the Pirongia Survey District and has 'For this section see Waitomo drawer' handwritten across it. Both of these maps have been struck through with a scribbled line. The Pirongia on the reverse is outlined in red while the Piopiotea map is coloured in red. The larger of the base maps is a plan of sections in the Piopiotea survey district of the West Taupo County. Auckland land district No. 1407. The smaller map is of a section in the Pirongia survey district in Waitomo County. Schedules of this second class land are referred to in a key. The vegetation is described, tramways are included and a small part of the Wanganui River, Mangarautawhiri and Pungapunga Streams are named. Includes several references to worked out bush and timber milling and includes the printed name of Ellis & Burnard Ltd. Instructions to applicants and a caution follow the with the printed name of H.M. Skeet, Commissioner of Crown Lands. A statement on the left side of the map verso reads 'Lands for sale or lease to discharged soldiers, 1421 acres'. Includes the application date of 23rd. January 1922 at the District Lands and Survey Office, Auckland. The map of Pirongia on the reverse is outlined in red while the Piopiotea map is coloured in, in red. A map, inset on the bottom right, is a locality plan of the area from the Hauraki Gulf to New Plymouth and Taumarunui. Both locations are indicated with arrows on the map on the reverse.
