Description: A notebook containing notes and rough diary entries. From one end are brief entries and notes relating to Taranaki negotiations in 1854, including a summary of a letter to Governor Grey about the Bell block purchase. Most of the notebook, however, concerns McLean's visit to Marlborough and nearby districts in early 1856. He gives brief, often barely decipherable entries about the various negotiations with Ngati Toa, Rangitane and other groups. Included are lengthy accounts of earlier Marlborough and Taranaki history given him by the Guard family, including an account of the 1834 incident involving Betty Guard and the HMS Alligator.
