Description: Photographs of the West Coast, Christchurch and Dunedin taken by Charles Tenison Salmon, circa 1906 to 1909. Two photographs show unidentified children; a small boy wearing a sunhat, shorts and a jacket and socks and shoes playing with a toy boat at the edge of a stream (p 6); and a young girl wearing a dress, socks and shoes, and a lacy hat (p 23). A number of images show native clematis flowering in the Otira Gorge; and several show wild coastal scenes in the Dunedin area. Description: Album with [18] pages of images of the Otira Gorge area and the West Coast. Includes views of Bealey Hotel, Porter's Pass, Otira Gorge, the wire ropeway with cage across the Teremakau River, the Grey-Kumara tramway, native bush on the West Coast, horse and buggy under Hawks Crag on the Buller Gorge road, Arthur's pass. Most of the photographs are taken by James Ring, and are inscribed with title, photographer's initials, and photographer's number. Five images have no inscriptions, and the final one was taken by the Burton Brothers. Pages 1-17 and 21 have photographs inserted, pages 18-20 are blank. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Account of his journey, as guide for John Henry Whitcombe, from the headwaters of the Rakaia River across the Southern Alps to the mouth of the Taramakau River, near Kumara. Whitcombe was working on contract for the Canterbury Provincial Government and drown during the expedition. Also, holograph notes by William Young of Lauper's and Whitcombe's exploration. Description: Looking south along the coastline of the West Coast, showing travellers fording the mouth of the Taramakau River, and Mount Cook, its height exaggerated, amongst the Southern Alps By the same hand as A-048-026: [Taupo Lake]. Corresponds closely to the chromolithograph in: Hochstetter, F. von. New Zealand, its physical geography. Stuttgart, 1867, p. 38, entitled: The Southern Alps ... Ch. Heaphy del. A. Meerman sc. The chromolithograph has slightly more details, suggesting that this is a comtemporary careful copy. The Heaphy drawing on which it is based was done in 1846. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, both North and South Islands, taken by Daniel Mundy between 1860 and 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p. 51). The views include a number in the Thames goldfields, with scenes of gold batteries, miners' huts, and a tramway. Mundy includes two rivers which are now differently named, the Tekihe River [i.e. Taheke River], and Tiremakau River [i.e. Taramakau River]. Quantity: 1 album(s).
