Description: Seated portrait of Kawakawa (Bay of Islands) chief Rangituke, his wife leaning on his shoulder, his son seated at his feet, viewed, according to the artist, 'from the window of my hut at the Bay of Islands' (Russell or Kawakawa?). A carved storehouse is in the right background and a whare and storage platform on the left, with the sea beyond. According to Earle 'it illustrates the general attachment of the natives of New Zealand to their wives and children'. Description: The artist and his friend, Mr Shand, seated in a rocky inlet, surrounded by bush, in coversation with Hongi Hika and a group of family and other attendants. Two canoes are drawn up on the beach to the left and other Maori are visible in the distance. A carved figure leans from a rock behind and above Hongi. There are rifles and cartridge cases on the ground and one man is holding a taiaha. The scene is on a beach close to Russell (Kororareka) and took place in November 1827. Four slaves are pounding fern root on rocks beside two fires, watched by their masters; a third fire on the right has a group of four Maori huddled around it. A storehouse (pataka) and other storage mechanisms, including a platform on poles and forked sticks holding bundles containing food, and several other low houses with raupo thatch are surrounded by palisades. Description: A group of Māori in front of a tent shelter. The group includes two seated women, one breast-feeding an infant, a naked todler reclining in front and two young men standing behind, one with a rifle and cartridge case. A tewhatewha lies in front on top of a pile of cloaks. A third woman kneels to the right, her back to the artist and her face hidden. According to Oliver's accompanying text, the scene is at Kororāreka (modern Russell) in 1851, during the feast (hākari) put on by Tamati Waka Nene. Text reads: 'The man on the right with the musket is Neddy, who fought against us under Heki (Hone Heke) at Ruapekapeka. The girl next to him is Maria ... the woman with the baby is said to be the daughter of the Chevalier Dillon; and on the left is Jane, who was famous for her personal attractions ...The old lady kneeling on the right is "Na Nuia" Pomare's wife, who placed herself in that becoming attitude to avoid having her portrait taken.' 'Jane, who was famous for her personal attractions' may be Jane Gray, daughter of Alexander Gray and Kotero Hinerangi. Title transcribed from item. Description: View from the flagstaff at Russell , with American Consul, James Reddy Clendon's American flag flying, and three people standing at the base of the flagpole, looking out towards the entrance to the Bay of Islands. Clendon's home was at Okiato, but the view of the entrance to the Bay of Islands seems more likely to have been from a high point at Russell. Description: A European man, probably Earle himself, being led down a steep path by a Maori with a mere on his wrist and a taiaha over his shoulder and gesturing towards the beachside settlement of Kororareka (Russell) in the background. A second Maori man is behind Earle, carrying his baggage with a gourd balanced atop the load. There is a ship in the bay, two canoes being rowed into shore, other canoes pulled up on the beach, and European houses on the flat land at the water's edge.
