Description: Peg Heeney (Ripeka Paiatehau Ngarimu), Kate Walker (Keita Whakato Ngarimu) and Tusy Floyd give details of Hiruharama School including mention of Hiruharama School Choir, school motto, truancy (not being a problem), fighting at school, school transport, annual sports trips to Tokomaru Bay, the school grounds being very muddy, being taught to look after babies, cook, wait on tables, Eruera Moeke beginning milk in school scheme in the 1930's, excitement of schooling, singing with Mr Trimmer, learning English parrot fashion, change of head teachers from Mr King to Mr Henry Trimmer, the only Maori being taught was moteatea, concentration at school on life skills,action songs at school, teachers being multi-talented and how the school belonged to the community. Tusi Floyd also talks about songs sung by the choir and recorded in Wellington in 1939, about her school compositions and being interviewed for Radio Ngati Porou. Discusses the meaning of the Treaty, inconsistencies between the texts, the importance of retention of the Maori language and the Maori Language Act. Talks about Maori fishing rights, Ngati-Porou land rights, raupatu and land taken unfairly, land tenure and land use in the traditional and contemporary context. Defines the concept of tino rangatiratanga in relation to land tenure and relates aspects of health to this concept. Discusses concept of turangawaewae and problems of living within the system.
