Description: Includes sketches of Plimmerton, Mana, Kapiti, Waikato River below the rapids, the mountains of the Central Plateau, a view of the Central Plateau from the summit of Mount Tongariro, a view from near the Ketetahi Crater, the Crater Lake on Ruapehu, Waihohomo at twilight, double portrait of Gilfedder and Jones, a panorama of Taupo. There are also handwritten notes about the eruption of Ruapehu on 15 March 1906, a sketch of Rangitahau and notes aboutt aking the tapu off a whare. Description: Land clearance and development projects during the 1950s. Photographs show examples of techniques and machinery used for bringing in land such as rolling and crushing scrub and using cattle to crush and clear lupins. Much of the land developed for agriculture during this period was pumice land. There is a slide sequence designed to show methods for establishing pasture on this particular soil type, and a number of other slides showing the finished product -- productive farms in the Rotorua area. Landblocks named in this collection are, Newstead Block, "Rushden" Waipukurau, Lynwood F. S., and Okahukura Block. The inside spread shows an illustration of a woman skiing, and photographs of Mt Ngauruhoe as seen from the Chateau, the interior of the dining room, guests in sunchairs on the terrace, and other views of the hotel, as well as text about the Chateau Skiing School and tourist side trips. Description: Photographs showing New Zealand geological features taken in 1939, and images used to illustrate "From Mountains to Meteorites" by Brian Mason and Simon Nathan. The album photographs were taken in an area west of the Volcanic Plateau extending from the Taumarunui area in the north and including the Kaitieki/Retaruke area, the Tangarakau River and the Wanganui River to Pipiriki in the south. The images record many secondary rivers and streams, fault lines, rock formations, volcanic deposits, clays, and waterfalls. Photographs in the album pages were taken by Brian Mason during a geological expedition exploring for oil of which he was a member.
