Includes a photograph of the crowded deck of the `Waikere' a few minutes before the boat struck land in Dusky Sound in 1910. Also photographs of knighthood being confered upon George Richardson in Samoa; an archaeological site near Rotorua; Kumara, Westland, in 1886; Empire Day celebrations 1905; the first annual apprentice exam held at the Hutt shops, Hutt Valley, in 1930; and sketches of Riccarton House, Canterbury, made by J W Barnicoat in 1844 and R Park circa 1859. Description: One album of photographs and postcards, probably compiled by Elizabeth Porteous of the NZANZ (New Zealand Army Nursing Service) who was awarded the ARRC (Associate Royal Red Cross). These are mainly postcards of her travels in England and Scotland during World War I. Also contains some images related to nursing work. The photographs relating to military nursing work include group portraits of patients and staff at a military hospital, two taken during Christmas celebrations. There are also two photographs of an interior of a large industrial building being used as a dormitory, probably to house soldiers. Subjects and locations are all unidentified. Postcards include: Views of Edinburgh, Scotland, include Edinburgh Castle, Craigmillar Castle, The Abbey Strand, St Giles Cathedral, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Arthur's Seat, Queen Margaret's Chapel, and the 'audience room' at the former residence of John Knox. Views of Bath, Somerset, England, include Bath Abbey, the Grand Pump Room Hotel, and Roman colonnades. Views of Brockenhurst, Hampshire, England, the location of No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, and including views of the Rose and Crown Hotel. Views of Christchurch, Dorset, include the Christchurch Priory Church, Constable's Ruin (Constable's House), Highcliffe Castle, and a thatched cottage at Wick Ferry. Views of the county of Kent, England, include the pier, promenade and time ball at Deal, also Canterbury Cathedral, and the town of Sandwich. Miscellaneous New Zealand scenes include two photographs taken by Muir and Moodie: The Green Lake, Rotorua, and Dannevirke railway station, taken 1 Apr 1912. There is also a postcard with the photographer identified as 'Daroux' (probably either Louis John Daroux or James Henry Daroux), taken 28 August 1916, showing WWI troops from the 18th regiment reinforcements marching over Rimutaka Hill, Wellington. Description: Views of the Southern Lakes District, interspersed with a few scenes in the North Island taken by the Burton Brothers and Muir & Moodie between about 1885 and 1919. Most of the places mentioned are listed above. Image no. 63 shows a party of men and women at Sandfly Point (Milford Sound) showing some of the women wearing veils over their hats for protection from sandflies; image no. 79 "Phantom canoe as seen on Lake Tarawera" is an artist's impression of the phantom canoe which appeared to a group of tourists on Lake Tarawera on May 31st prior to the eruption of Mount Tarawera on June 10th 1886 and which was considered to be a bad omen; image no. 82 shows a collage "No. 1. Maori Land. The portraits are originals - taken from life"; image no. 094 shows a close-up view of the "wire tram" over the Taramakau River; no. 095 shows a logging tramway in the Taupaki Kauri Bush belonging to Matthew Henry Roe, while no. 120 shows his Kauri Point Sawmill, with the paddle steamer "Oregon" in the background; no. 096 shows a self-acting tramway incline at Wairongomai used for gold extraction; nos 104 and 105 show gold dredges, "the Dunedin Gold Dredge" and "Sew Hoy's Dredge".
