Royal tour 1901

Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. One photograph shows Lord Ranfurly in Auckland, reading the proclamation extending the boundaries of the colony to include the Cook Islands (p 16). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). McIntosh album 16

Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, between 1900 and 1905. The images follow on from McIntosh album 15, (these are pages 815-835) starting at Opunake (a church building). Pihama (a memorial to members of the crew of the barque Lizzie Bell which was wrecked off Oeo, 24th July 1901), a view of the Oeo Hotel (F. Morgan, proprietor), and a view of the mast of the Lizzie Bell standing as a memorial at Pihama. These are followed by a panorama of Parihaka (p. 822-823), and a portrait of a man named Ruru, at Parihaka. The rest of the album has scenes in the Auckland area, including a view of Queen Street in which the chemist shop of Charles J Ratgen is clearly visible. A series of images show various Maori artifacts on display at the Auckland Museum. Scenery in Auckland includes the Auckland Domain, Epsom, Tamaki, Auckland Harbour, Rangitoto, St Heliers, Mount Hobson and Mount Eden. Two church buildings are seen, one at Opunake, and the remains of a stone church at Tamaki. A group of photographs show horse-drawn carriages decorated with flowers for a floral fete (p 835-838). Walton's Estate is adjacent to the Pybus Estate. A river runs through two sections and through a section marked 'Trust Land, Trust property'. Description: Album of pressed ferns, most of which are used to frame images of New Zealand, but some pages consist solely of pressed ferns. The photographs show New Zealand scenes, and include two postcards of collages. One has the legend "Maoridom" and at the base "The old order changeth" with a photograph of Maori king Tawhiao, and various artifacts including taiaha, cloaks, and two preserved heads of Maori. The other shows portraits of a number of Maori men and women, and views of Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Among the views of new Zealand scenery are images of the White Terraces in eruption, the Pink Terraces, Manawatu Gorge, Dunedin, Queen Street (Auckland), Lake Ada, and Tois Tois [sic] Island on the Clinton River, Lake Te Anau. South African war album

Description: Photographs of the North Island Regiment of the New Zealand Army 8th Contingent in preparation for leaving on the troopship Surrey to fight in the South African War. These photographs were taken by Alfred Jones & Co. mostly in Auckland. They include views of speeches by Richard John Seddon, and General Babington in Auckland., and the departure of the Surrey from Auckland. Other images show the Surrey in Wellington Harbour, rowing eights in the harbour and the Contingent's military camp in Newtown. Two views show warships in Wellington Harbour and a decorated gateway in the city for the Duke of York's visit to New Zealand. There are a number of views of the processions and ceremonies for the funeral of Cecil Rhodes in Cape Town. Richard Seddon's visit to the Hudson's Soap Works in Liverpool is shown in several photographs taken by an unidentified photographer. Page 45 shows a "review at Pretoria" at which there was a "presentation of V.C.s and also a Royal Humane Society medal to Sergt. Cassidy N.Z.M.R. by Lord Roberts". The information is hand-written over the photograph as a Christmas greeting. Inserted in an envelope is a sheet of paper with the signatures of "Colonel Wyndham and the Officers of the Imperial Representative Corps". (Colonel Wyndham was with the 21st Lancers). Description: Album of photographs taken by James Valentine & Sons, circa 1880s-1900s. Most of the images have a caption printed into the photograph, and many also have a hand-written caption beneath. At some point many of the photographs have been removed from their slots, and others have been placed in the wrong slot so that the subject and caption on the photograph does not match with the caption below. Places are listed above. There are five photographs of Maori, three of women, two of chiefs. The names given are difficult to identify, having complicated spelling, and the captions on photographs have faded in some cases. They include "Maori wahine Ngareti"; "Maori chief Hoera Watene"; "Maori chiefs Panapa Tenihotiti and Topopoki" and "Maori wahine Huihana?".
