On the far right is the head office of the Auckland Harbour Board; all in Quay Street. On the left new concrete piles are being driven into the harbour bed. In the foreground workmen are replacing wooden blocks on the old wharf. A large crowd is gathered and all are looking towards the photographer. On the right is a horse and cart with a number of young men standing on board, some with cards in their hatbands. The reason for the gathering is not indicated but it may have been to listen to speeches by a politican or trade unionist.
