Description: View from the lower end of the Terrace, looking down into the Aro Valley and Te Aro Flat and across towards Mount Victoria, Oriental Bay and the Miramar Peninsula. Part of the Thorndon end of the city can be seen on the left. Courtenay Place runs away from the viewer in the centre of the scene, with Marjoribanks Street moving up Mount Victoria. The gasometers on both sides of Courtenay Place show clearly. On the far right in the distance is Wellington College. Description: View possibly from upper Dixon Street or McDonald Crescent, looking across Te Aro and up Willis Street towards Mount Victoria. St Peter's Church dominates the centre of the view and the Gasworks can be seen immediately to the left of the steeple of the church. Marjoribanks Street shows up clearly rising up Mount Victoria, and Oriental Bay, the entrance to Evans Bay and Miramar Peninsula are also clearly visible. Bush in the foreground, shops along Willis Street and several houses. In the right foreground is a large house with two steep gables, and a tree-filled garden, including two young Norfolk Pines. Note to A.H. Turnbull on corner. Description: Oriental Bay, Wellington, showing the rail track that was constructed from the Oriental Bay quarry to the Te Aro reclamation by Peter McGrath. Taken by Connolly & Co (Firm) ca 1883. The rail track ran out into Te Aro Harbour over a trestle railway. Peter McGrath undertook to reclaim 23 acres in 1882 and went bankrupt in 1884. Description: Looking along Oriental Parade, Oriental Bay, Wellington, circa 1884. Photographer unidentified. Looks along a road, showing the coastline on the left and hills on the right. A group of two storied wooden houses is in the centre. James Edward Fitzgerald's house Clyde Cliff is on top of a hill, right of centre, on a site later occupied by St Gerard's Monastery. Source of descriptive information - The inscription signed G F G was possibly written by Geraldine Fitzgerald shortly before her death in 1955. Other Titles - Note - Inscription mis-spells Gerard's Inscriptions: Mount recto - beneath image - The Wellington home of J E Fitzgerald, about 1884. This site is now occupied by St Gerrard's monastery.; Mount verso - Clyde Cliff in 1884 or earlier. The cliff was cut down for reclamation about'85 or'86. G F G Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Description: Shows Wellington city and harbour viewed from the area near the top of Vivian Street. A figure in horseback rides along a track curving around the hill slope at the left, and four head of cattle stand on a path amongst willows and other trees at the right. Further away is a road, possibly Abel Smith Street, with buildings including a house with a square turret. A church at left centre near the waterfront appears to be of Gothic design. There are several sail and steam ships in the harbour near Queens Wharf. The Hutt Valley and the snow-capped Tararuas can be seen in the distance. The original watercolour for a chromolithograph published in Barraud's "New Zealand graphic and descriptive" (London, 1879). Accompanied by backing board with name of Mrs Pownall, previous owner. Description: View from the south end of Oriental Bay looking north toward Wellington, showing rowing boat, boat-sheds, cows in field, houses, Oriental Parade and Oriental Terrace The large red house on the hill, upper left, was known as 'Thomas's Folly' and was built of Australian hardwood by Sir Godfrey John Thomas, half-brother to Sir George Grey, then later owned by Alfred Maurice Lewis of Thompson Lewis. The wood used for this house was said to have been left over from the Government Buildings in Lambton Quay. The large white house, also on the left, but lower, in Wilkinson Street (leading to Grass Street), was first owned by a Mr Wilkinson. The single-storey house on the corner of Hay Street was owned by a Mr Laurence Arcus. Painting has been trimmed.
