Description: View through a gap in native bush in the foreground to houses and a church, with bush on the far side of the settlement. A small stream and a bridge can also be seen. Date of 1870s sugggested, since the artist's marriage in 1870 gave her Masterton connections. Described in McArthur's catalogue as View of Masterton but wrongly ascribed to Charles Johnston Pharazyn, husband of the artist. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - F. M. P. Description: A crowd of people outside the tobacconists store run by R Farmer in Masterton, 26 September 1887, the day of the general election. The group includes a row of boys and some unidentified Maori. Above, three male effigies are attached to the upper wall of the shop. These represent the three candidates for the seat. They are George Beetham (the dandy), who was the winner of the election, R E Hawkins (the pirate), and A W Hogg (the pig). The photograph was taken by Albert Edward Winzenberg, from the verandah of the Club Hotel. (The effigies were later auctioned). Description: A photograph taken by Thomas E Price of a lithograph made by Edward Wyllie depicting a seated man, with a ballot box for a head and with a mug of beer before him, carrying a banner with election results. Two men are seated on his arm and three more, with photographs of the heads of (from the top) T E Price, G Dixon and W Wilton pasted in. Collage made in the 1880s.
