Description: Jack (right) and Rudolph Lousich collecting donations for their father Louis Lousich. The sign reads: 'Deserving Case. Be so kind as to patronise the blind man a widower with five children who lost his sight and right arm by an explosion of dynamite at Kumara. Smallest donation thankfully received.' Description: Show distant canvas covered wagon stopped on the Greymouth to Kumara wooden tramway running through Taramakau bush. Two passengers are visible leaning against the back of the bush tram, circa 1880s. Tram would have been horse drawn, but horse not visible. Photographer unidentified. Following the gold rush of 1876, a horse drawn wooden tramway was built between Greymouth and Kumara, Westland. The trip took three hours. Trams carried passengers and freight. Passengers had to cross the Taramakau River in a cage or flying fox suspended from a cable.
