Description: Overlooking land leading down to the sea at Kawhia, with the steamship Hinemoa visible. A waka is just visible on the piece of land alongside the ship, in the middle distance. It was possibly used for escorting officials to or from the ship. Photograph taken on Friday, 14th March 1884, by William Williams, on the occasion of Governor W F D Jervois' visit. Large two-storey building on Jerome Street (later known as Jervois Street) is Hotel Moana built 1904. Also shows the post office (seaward side of the Hotel); Jonathan's Ltd (two along from the seaward side of the post office); the Courthouse built 1908 (to right of the two Norfolk pines); site of Motu Ngaio Pa (on hill above town, with a few houses). Description: Powhiri (official welcoming ceremony) for Governor Sir William Jervois, Lady Jervois, and party (Miss A Jervois, Reverend W Jervois, Miss A Richmond, and Major C V Eccles) at Omiti, a Ngati Pare kainga, on Kawhia Harbour, by chiefs of Ngati Hikairo, Hone Te One, Te Huki (Hone Wetere), Pikia Haurua, Tiki Taimana (Rihare Tauwhare), and Tetahi Rahi (or Te Tihirahi) of Ngati Haua. Shows a scene outside the homestead of Te Huki or Hone Wetere at Omiti, where a group of Maori are seated under the verandah. On the left, Maori chief Te Huki (Hone Wetere) holds a taiaha. The Governor, and his group, are on the right. Hone Te One is seated on the verandah to the back. Photograph taken Friday, 14 March 1884, by William Williams. Description: View of the township at Kawhia on the inner north-western shoreline of the Kawhia Harbour, Otorohanga District. Shows the general store (Ward's Hall) and various buildings on the waterfront, boats in the sand, and a large Pohutukawa tree growing on the hill above the bay. Photograph taken circa 1920s, by an unidentified photographer. Additional information about the two storied buldling supplied by a researcher 'Two-storey building in foreground with Ward Bros sign was built in 1903 by Scott. It had a business on the ground floor and a hall above known as Scott's Hall. In 1923 WP Ward purchased the building on behalf of Ward Bros (engineering & plumbing) and the hall was later referred to as Ward's Hall.
