Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Ron Sinclair was born in Eltham in 1930. His early life was spent in Taranaki where his father was a school teacher. Recalls being keen on sport, being dux, going to Ardmore Teachers College and teaching at Inglewood. Talks about when his mother died, his father broke his neck, his brother and sister were in hospital and he went to work on his sick uncle's dairy and cropping farm near Dannveirke. Recalls that this was 1952 and he stayed on the farm for twenty years. Mentions marrying in 1954 and having three children. Comments on his interest and involvement in church life. Recalls being a lay reader, being encouraged to go into the church and being ordained a priest in 1976. Mention his withdrawal from the Masonic Lodge and giving up divining water. Recalls working in the Anglican ministry at the hospital, putting a share-milker on the farm and becoming minister at Porangahau. Discusses the challenge of getting to know Maori, attending tangi, services on the marae and baptism of Maori. Describes a move to New Plymouth, family discussions and chaplaincy at the Taranaki Base Hospital. Recalls returning to Hawkes Bay to care more for his father. Mentions industrial chaplaincy and being minister at Hastings. Talks about his children's occupations. Comments on boundary changes in the new electorates, local body politics, art deco buildings and Jeremy Dwyer, Mayor of Hastings. Description: Comprises typescript copy of original typescript of report by Baird on his visit to areas affected by the Hawke's Bay Earthquake. He gives the reasons for his visit, describes the people he met and the damage to each place he visited and includes observations on earthquakes in general and in particular. His travels (accompanied by Dr C E Adams, Dominion Astronomer and Seismologist) took him by car from Wellington, over the Rimutakas, through Waipukurau to Napier. From there he visited Hastings, flew over the land from Cape Kidnappers to Wairoa, and again travelled by car to places outside Napier and Hastings. Original carbon typescript was indistinct in places so there are omissions in this version.
