Description: The signature `May Moore' inside front cover, is possibly that of Mrs May Moore (daughter of Sir Joseph Kinsey), who travelled and mountaineered in the areas covered by the album. Album containing 21 scenes of the South Island. Of these, 12 were taken by photographers Muir and Moodie, between 1907 and 1913. The Muir and Moodie numbers for these views are 1810, 6743, 6752, 6780, and 6782 to 6789. The photographer for the other nine images is not identified. 24 leaves are blank. Several of the Muir and Moodie views were taken on 1st January 1913, a number of which show various stages of a group crossing the Haast Pass on horseback. Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: Comprises foreword by Holt re background to travels and mostly daily diary entries describing the voyage from England to Malaya and then to Singapore, a further voyage to Australia and travelling in Australia, arriving at Perth and travelling by land across to Melbourne and later to Canberra, Townsville, Sydney and other places before coming to NZ on the `Monowai' in Dec 1935. Holt further describes her travels in NZ, partly based in Wairoaiti near Napier, but visiting family members in Taupo, Rotorua, the Chateau, and travelling extensively in the South Island. Interspersed are transcriptions of letters she wrote to her family in England, and line illustrations. Holt describes her South Island travels which began 31 Jan 1936 via Picton, Christchurch and environs, Dunedin, Invercargill, Manapouri and Doubtful Sound, the Milford and Greenstone tracks, Queenstown, the Routeburn, Wanaka and the Haast Pass, up the West Coast and back to Wairoaiti before leaving from Port Chalmers. Source of title - Transcribed from auction entry Holt travelled to NZ via Malaya and Australia from 9 Aug 1935 to 5 Jun 1936; kept a diary as well as writing letters home. Describes immigrating to New Zealand with his parents when he was 8 years old and growing up during the Depression in Auckland and Christchurch. Talks about his education at Richmond Primary School and his university studies in chemistry. Discusses his various experiences of bicycle trips throughout New Zealand. Describes in detail a 1935 trip over the 'Five Passes' (Porters, Arthurs, Haast, Lindis and Burkes) with other cyclists Graeme Milne and John A. Sanderson. Mentions various highlights of this trip including the towns and people they met, difficulties in crossing rivers and the food they ate. Talks about other trips around South Island to places such as Hanmer, Lewis Pass, Westport, Karamea, Cauldervale, Heaphy Track, Nelson, Picton, Grove Track, Blenheim and Kaikoura. Mentions that he had never heard of anyone previous to him cycling the Heaphy Track. Recalls cycling trips he did when he was working in a munitions factory in Melbourne during World War Two. Including trips to Julong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Ulyangs, Albury, Mount Kosciusko and Canberra. Describes the clothing and bicycles used during these adventures. After the War he returned to New Zealand and kept cycling. Met his wife on a cycling trip to the Milford Sound when the Homer Tunnel was partially complete.
