Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Mount Tarawera, viaducts under construction, and the mountains of the Volcanic Plateau

Description: There are three main groups of images in this album. The first is about a climb up Mount Tarawera in September 1908. It includes views of the craters and the rift resulting from the eruption, and views over the surrounding countryside from the summit including lakes Tarawera and Rotomahana. The party also did some sailing in a launch on the lakes before moving on to the Waimangu thermal area and Wakarewarewa. The second group feature railway viaducts being constructed on the main trunk line in May 1908. Those depicted are the Makatote Viaduct, the Hapuawhenua Viaduct, and the Taonui Viaduct. There are two photographs of the road bridge over the Makatote River, and two photographs of the party picnicing in the bush by the river. The third group relates to climbing Mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe over Easter 1909, and again over Easter 1910. There are views of Ngauruhoe erupting, the Mangaehuehu Glacier on Mount Ruapehu, the Crater Lake, the Ohinepango Spring, the party on both mountains, and a view Of Paretetaitonga Peak on Mount Ruapenu. Other images are photographic postcards one of which shows a group of Ohakune Boy Scouts on Mount Ruapehu (this group also includes four women). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes a view of Lake Okataina with Mount Tarawera; the Waimangu thermal area including Frying Pan Lake, Gibraltar Rock, a small terrace, and the buried village at Te Wairoa; the Huka Falls; the hydro dam and village at Atiamuri; the dam lake at Maraetai; Karapiro dam; and Mount Pirongia. Slides on this sheet are numbered 377-407 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 381-382, 386-389, 391, 405) showing Gibraltar Rock at Waimangu, steaming cliffs at Lake Rotomahana, Mount Tarawera, launch on Lake Tarawera and the buried village at Te Wairoa. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows aspects of the thermal areas at Whakarewarewa and Waimangu, and scenes of Maori life. These include a group using a hot pool for cooking, a group of poi dancers, women weaving flax, a Maori carver at work with a group of tourists watching, a Maori warrior at the gate of a pa, and a group of women and children wearing a variety of Maori cloaks. The next set are from the Tarawera area, and include views of the Frying Pan Lake, Gibraltar Rock; three images copied from publications, one showing the White Terraces, and two showing the effects of the Tarawera eruption in 1886; a launch for hire on Lake Tarawera; and the entrance to the buried village at Te Wairoa. The last two views show the beach near Gisborne looking south, and looking down over Gisborne township from a hill. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
