Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. They were members of a large party of watermen brought out to New Zealand as a group, generally referred to as the Deal Boatmen. Letters from Edward, who arrived on the "Star of India", 1874, comment on social conditions, and life on South Island railways, 1877-1912 (with diary of voyage from Lyttelton to UK on the SS `Turakina', Jul-Aug 1906); also his wife's and family's letters 1914-1958. Letters from James, comment on Dunedin, 1889-1892, giving first impressions, prices, trade union matters and working conditions. Letters from Frederick describing voyage to Lyttelton on the `Olive' in 1878, first impressions of Canterbury (later of Melbourne). Trip to Nelson, Picton, and the Sounds. This included a trip on the ship, Blenheim, on Pelorus and Queen Charlotte sounds, with a stop off at Havelock. General views of Nelson, and specifically Trafalgar Street from below the Cathedral. Bridge in Queens Gardens. Bridge over the Maitai River. A stop at Wangamoa on a motor trip from Nelson to Blenheim. Views of Picton and harbour. SS Admiral taking people on a picnic, Picton. Picton Waterworks. Train leaving Picton. Cadillac motor car abandoned after the engine caught fire for the second time. A race between two men in shells, one of whom was the New Zealand Champion single sculler, Darcy Hadfield. This race may be one of the two that took place on the Whanganui River in 1922. Party of men and women on a walk in rough bush country. Shotover River Bridge. Cromwell and the Clutha River. The Scott memorial at Port Chalmers. New Zealand Airforce Avro 504 at Sockburn (Wigram) Aerodrome. Views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, Mount Earnslaw, Paradise and Ben Lomond. SS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu. Mount Ruapehu, Aratiatia Rapids, and Huka Falls. Some prints in this collection have notes on the back in a consistant, neat handwriting. In three cases these are signed E N Webster, who advises that he arrived in Wellington 5 February 1918, and left 15 June 1922. During this period, as well as photographing Wellington and district, he travelled on holiday to New Zealand cities and tourist destinations. The photographs were taken between 1919 and 1921 judging from the prints that have dates. His second name was Norman, and this is the name he used to sign letters on postcards sent from Christchurch in 1919 to his mother, and a friend called May. There is also a note attached to an illustration of Ben Lomond in the collection on which he signs himself Norman Webster. In formation on the back of postcards indicate that he came from Australia, and in 1916 lived at Nambour, Queensland. Quantity: 148 b&w original photographic print(s).
