Description: Photocopy of an original drawing in the Library's collection (C-047-033) showing Henry Holland, Mayor of Christchurch, in top hat and formal suit, wearing his mayoral chain which is inscribed 'I stand alone'. He is tossing a pile of electoral promises into the air. Probably published in the Canterbury Times, for which Low was still working until 1911 before his departure for Australia Exhibited in 'The Line-Up' exhibition of 36 cartoons by 36 cartoonists curated by the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library auditorium foyer from 5 April 2002 to mark the tenth anniversary of establishment of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive. Description: A series of cartoons related to Henry Thomas Joynt Thacker, a Christchurch Mayoral candidate, leading a Salvation Army band by beating a large drum, and escaping from "The no-licence volcano". The other cartoons appear not to depict Dr Thacker, but show a tram supposedly running late, references to the Hon. D. Buddo, to Prime Minister Massey, to farmers, to Lord Roberts tugging a lion (Great Britain) by the tail in an attempt to introduce compulsory military training, to forthcoming elections. Description: Vignettes reflecting current affairs. 'Woes of a cartoonist' shows David Low, his head in his hands, desperately trying to avoid a Wellington problem, where an MP is prosecuting a cartoonist for depicting him from his back view. In a related sketch alongside, Christchurch Mayor, Tommy Taylor, threatens to prosecute the cartoonists, having recognised his own hair in a drawing. A Finnish village is shown chained to the mainland, after a whole village was reported to have floated away in Finland. A ghost threatens a Christchurch City Councillor with a long white beard. The councillor does not known his own mind. A farmer races away after being confronted in Canada with 80,000 prospective brides, a recent reported event. 'The Jap Polar expedition' shows a group of Japanese men greeting the Japanese consul in Christchurch, after their unexpected arrival. Neither group can understand the other, and Japanese script spelling out whisky, cow and banzai is shown. 'The great gas box, via canal' shows a box containing a gas tank too large to travel via the Lyttelton tunnel being hauled by a traction engine. Description: Vignettes reflecting issues current in 1911. 'Captain Scott was surprised to find the Amundsen expedition at the Polar regions' continues with 'Our pessimistic artist things he may possibly get a greater surprise when he reaches the Pole' and shows a Japanese man seated on The South Pole with Scott and another man drawing up alongside with their dog sled. 'No less than 4 prize fighters died in the ring last month' shows a boxer fighting against Death as a skeleton. 'Bridged. The Hon R. McKenzie opened the new Waiau bridge last week' shows McKenzie standing astride the Waiau River and forming a bridge out of his body. 'Massey at large' shows William Massey as a goat, making a very-badly received speech at Kaiapoi. A man being booted out of a gaol refers to the reduction in Johnson the pugilist's gaol sentence. The shocked schoolboy shows two small boys trying not to look at a poster of a scantily-clad dancer, the 'Champagne Girl' performing at an Auckland's Theatre Royal. Lord Lansdowne kneels before George V with Lord Asquith in the background, over the matter of the Crown creating new peerages. 'Dress rehearsal' shows Sir Joseph Ward in Irish costume, dancing an Irish jig before his visit to Ireland. 'Canal pies' shows a small boy contemplating the purchase of two very expensive pies, a larger one for a proposed canal between Lyttelton and Christchurch, a smaller one for Sumner to Heathcote. Description: Vignettes on current issues. The record buster shows the Minister of Railways, John Millar, seated astride a train, 'prosperity' with a caption about the record profits of New Zealand Railways. A Scotsman in uniform with a very long sporran illustrates a report of an article about Scots soldiers having their kilts taken from them, but not their sporrans. Sir Joseph Ward is depicted as a dog tangled up in rope, 'dedicated to Mr D Jones' with a reference to giving a dog a long enough rope and he'll hang himself. 'Magician Poole' is shown placing an extinguisher, National Prohibition' over a barrel of alcohol. 'Messrs Allen and Herries are conducting the Opposition campaign, shows James Allen and William Herries flogging an almost dead horse, 'The Conservative Party'.
