Description: Poster (red on white) protesting about the fact that the foreign-controlled Comalco Bluff aluminium smelter gets continuous electric power at one quarter the price paid by private new Zealand consumers; in 1973 it drew off 10% of New Zealand's total power production, and was subsidised by $11 million. Illustrations show, at top left, a man wrapped in a blanket reading newspaper headlines about power cuts by oil lamplight; and at top right a smiling COMALCO official in dark glasses sitting at a desk, with a photograph of the Bluff smelter behind him. Trip to Nelson, Picton, and the Sounds. This included a trip on the ship, Blenheim, on Pelorus and Queen Charlotte sounds, with a stop off at Havelock. General views of Nelson, and specifically Trafalgar Street from below the Cathedral. Bridge in Queens Gardens. Bridge over the Maitai River. A stop at Wangamoa on a motor trip from Nelson to Blenheim. Views of Picton and harbour. SS Admiral taking people on a picnic, Picton. Picton Waterworks. Train leaving Picton. Cadillac motor car abandoned after the engine caught fire for the second time. A race between two men in shells, one of whom was the New Zealand Champion single sculler, Darcy Hadfield. SS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu. Mount Ruapehu, Aratiatia Rapids, and Huka Falls. Some prints in this collection have notes on the back in a consistant, neat handwriting. In three cases these are signed E N Webster, who advises that he arrived in Wellington 5 February 1918, and left 15 June 1922. During this period, as well as photographing Wellington and district, he travelled on holiday to New Zealand cities and tourist destinations. The photographs were taken between 1919 and 1921 judging from the prints that have dates. His second name was Norman, and this is the name he used to sign letters on postcards sent from Christchurch in 1919 to his mother, and a friend called May. There is also a note attached to an illustration of Ben Lomond in the collection on which he signs himself Norman Webster. In formation on the back of postcards indicate that he came from Australia, and in 1916 lived at Nambour, Queensland. Quantity: 148 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Photographs of the Egmont Box Co Ltd, probably at Eltham, showing stacked milled timber, access roads, trucks, factory sheds, a circular kiln-like building, managers houses, and workmen's quarters. Associated with this group of photographs are images of youths at a swimming pool, a railway line and locomotive, a bridge, and a hydroelectric power house. All of the photographs date from the 1940s. A single photograph shows Owen McPhail as a young man with collegues from the Tokoroa Fire Brigade manning a fire hose. Photographs of the Manapouri hydroelectric project include details of machinary used in tunneling, the tunnel at different stages of construction, aerial views of the work site, the machinary yard, generators in the underground machine hall, and the Wanganella at Deep Cove. There are also postcards of Deep Cove and the surrounding mountains, the unlined tunnel, the Wanganella, Roxburgh hydro dam, ships at Bluff, views of Milford Sound, and four views of Auckland in the early 1950s.
