Description: Comprises 11 letters from Charles H Turner and Frank C Turner to their mother in England while they were sailing to New Zealand, travelling round New Zealand followed by a visit to Australia. Three of the letters are from Charles and eight are from Frank. They were written on board ship, the `Kent' and the `Tarama', and while they were travelling in New Zealand and Australia. Both sons describe life on board ship, the people they were travelling with, ports visited, activities on board ship and describe in some detail the various places they visited in New Zealand (Papakura, where their brother had a farm, Waikato, Lyttelton, Wellington, Bluff, Dunedin, Nelson, Auckland and Taranaki) and Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart Town). Description: Travel journal of Mr H J Brown. Details a five month, 9 Feb - 3 Jul 1894, journey to New Zealand and Australia. 9 Feb - 24 Mar : Describes the voyage on the ship 'Oroya' from London to Sydney. Includes details about activities aboard the ship, day excursions at port cities - Gibralter [sic] with a Portguese guide called Joseph Buzaglo; Naples and Pompeii ruins with Mr Cook & Son (Tour guides); Port Said; Colombo at the Oriental Hotel and vehicle tour with Mr Cohen; Albany, West Australia; Melbourne; and final port Sydney. 25 Mar - 3 Apr: Describes time in Sydney staying at the 'Australia Hotel', and travels at to the Blue Mountains and Kaloomba [sic]. 4 - 8 Apr : Describes the voyage on the ship 'Mararoa' from Sydney to Australia, and the unpleasant conditions on board. 9 - 19 Apr : Describes travel through the North Island from Auckland to Wellington on buggy and rail. Includes detailed description of visit to Whakarewarewa and hot pools area of Rotorua with tour guides Mr Cook & Son, staying at the 'Geyser Hotel', observations of Maori, cruise on Lake Rotorua to Mokoia Island, the story of Hinemoa and Tutauakie [sic], temple to the 'God of the Sweet Potato', Hamurana Stream, use of Maori language, Okere and Tutea Falls, Tikitere, Waiatapu Valley, Mount Tarawera eruption, Wairakie [sic], Huka Falls, Lake Taupo, Tarawera, the strains of buggy travel, Napier, train to Wellington, stay at the 'Occidential Hotel', pre European Maori times, and land ownership. 19 - 21 Apr : Describes voyage on the ship 'Penguin', from Wellington to Port Chalmers, via Lyttelton. Includes observation of Lyttelton. 21 - 26 Apr : Describes time in Dunedin, a visit to Rosslyn Woollen Mills, business trip to Woodlands and associates P Briscoe and Tom Price. 26 Apr - 1 May : Describes voyage on the ship 'Talune' from Port Chalmers to Hobart, Tasmania, via the Bluff. Includes retrospective general observations of New Zealand and Maori. 1 - 5 May : Describes Hobart, trip to Brown's River and train to Launceston. 7 - 8 May : Describes the voyage on the ship 'Patenna' from Launceston to Melbourne. 9 - 12 May : Describes time in Melbourne and the economy. 12 May - 3 July : Describes the return home voyage on the ship 'Ormuz' from Melbourne. Includes day excursions at port cities Adelaide, Colombo, Port Said, Naples, and Gibraltor; mentions 'Bluejackets' naval officers onboard, the frustration of the ship being quarantined in Colombo due to scarlet fever, the recreation onboard, and final entry mentions passing the ship 'Orient' outward bound. Description: Lingard-Monk's engaging account of his round the world voyage aboard the British steamship `S.S. Buteshire'. Written in a jocular manner the narrative details shipboard activities, the daily life onboard, weather patterns and the progress of the vessel in minute detail. Volume is arranged into seven chapters and also includes reflections on the journey, quotes, proverbs and a daily log of places visited with latitude and longitude figures. Journey leaves Albert Dock, London on 31 January 1897, returning 3rd August 1897. The `Buteshire' was one of the largest cargo ships of its day and Lingard-Monk was one of the few passengers on the voyage. Recounts the adventures of the ship's cat, the Captain, fellow passengers and crew throughout the journal. Comments on the Cape of Good Hope as the first significant milestone of the voyage. Arrived at Port Adelaide, Australia on 24th March. `Buteshire' continued on to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Townsville and back to Sydney. Steamed across to New Zealand entering Foveaux Strait on 23rd May and visited Bluff where the author tastes Bluff oysters, at two pence a dozen. Many pages are devoted to humorous verse and instruction: "Instructions to passengers when conversing with Officers of the U.S.S. Co vessels" and "A valedictory address to the Union Shipping Company of New Zealand by a long suffering passenger". Both items appear to be written after the Captain advises Lingard-Monk that the ship is not to visit Wellington as planned. Further stop in Christchurch before the `Buteshire' begins her homeward leg via Cape Horn, stopping at the Canary Islands to collect mail, then onwards to Gravesend, arriving 3rd August. Lingard-Monk finishes by noting that the vessel broke down 22 times between Lyttelton and London.
