Description: Comprise Meade's journals on the Esk and Curacao, botanical, biological, meteorological and and scientific observations, sandal wood, and the journal of a tour from Auckland to Taranaki 1849-1850 by Governor Grey Source of title - Transcribed Brenchley first visited the Pacific in 1850 with the French traveller, Jules Remy, during his American tour. He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: Tylden began writing his reminiscences in 1907 and continued till 1913; he writes of his childhood, education, military training in England and coming to New Zealand in 1862 with the 70th Regiment. He gives full accounts of skirmishes in the Waikato, Wanganui and New Plymouth areas from 1863 to 1866. Following his discharge in 1868 he returned to farm in the Pukekohe area until 1881 and practised law in Auckland from 1882 to 1912. Description: These journals are intermittent in coverage and those for the period 2 Sep 1846-8 Dec 1849 are apparently missing from the General Archives. After Garin went to Nelson he appears to have been an occasional diarist only. The inventory therefore notes nearly all entries from the year 1850 onwards. In addition to the journals there is a precis by Garin of Pompallier's published history of the mission, followed by notes on the history of the Wellington diocese, with particular emphasis on Nelson. Also some notes on Nelson schools and churches, the latest note having been written in 1882.
