Description: The signature `May Moore' inside front cover, is possibly that of Mrs May Moore (daughter of Sir Joseph Kinsey), who travelled and mountaineered in the areas covered by the album. Album containing 21 scenes of the South Island. Of these, 12 were taken by photographers Muir and Moodie, between 1907 and 1913. The Muir and Moodie numbers for these views are 1810, 6743, 6752, 6780, and 6782 to 6789. The photographer for the other nine images is not identified. 24 leaves are blank. Several of the Muir and Moodie views were taken on 1st January 1913, a number of which show various stages of a group crossing the Haast Pass on horseback. Description: Unidentified views of the Southern Alps and Lake Pukaki, taken by Algernon Charles Gifford. The last six pages in the album contain an undated newspaper article written for the Oamaru Mail, signed A G C, entitled `To Mount Cook by car'. He describes in detail a trip alongside Lake Pukaki to The Hermitage at Mount Cook, and a walking tour staying at various mountain huts, including the Malte Brun Hut, negotiating glaciers, moraine, and crevasses with views of mountains all around. The trip to the Hermitage was taken by a group travelling in two hired Darracq cars (one a 24 horsepower Darracq, and one 15 h.p.). This album appears to be linked with Gifford Albums 4, 5, 6 and 7, all of which relate to the information in the article written by Gifford. Description: The collection includes a typed list of headings along with their NZAC negative numbers. The related prints, some duplicated, have their negative numbers on the reverse. These are of: men with pack horses next to the Waiatoto River; men on horseback fording the Waiatoto; landing cargo from a row boat at Bruce Bay and loading up a horse and cart; the Waiatoto River; horses swimming across the Blue River; part of the Haast Range including Stargazer and Moonraker taken from the shoulder of the Glacier Dome; the Eggelings homestead at Waiatoto; a group of Maori women and children in European dress at Bruce Bay ca 1910s; Mount Aspiring from Therma Glacier; an avalanche from the shoulder of Stargazer; Mount Aspiring from near Glacier Dome; Stargazer from the upper Waiatoto; and the view looking down the Waiatoto River from the Therma Glacier. Other photographs which are not on the list but some of which have original negatives in this collection are of a small group of soldiers staying in a mountain hut and camping at the foot of Aoraki/Mount Cook. One of them shows the men standing in a line in a clearing with their rifles, possibly on a military exercise. Also included is a photograph of cows in a field in the snow.
