Description: Coastline of Arahura district, Westland, looking south with Mount Cook in the distance and a sailing ship offshore, near the mouth of the Taramakau River. Similar images are held by the British Library, in a private collection in Basel and reproduced in Hochstetter's New Zealand (Stuttgart, 1867). As this version has the initials 'C.C.' (Cherie Connell), it is possible that she painted this copy herself. Originally dates from Heaphy's five-month long exploration from Nelson to the West Coast near Hokitika, in company with William Fox, Thomas Brunner and Kehu, March-August 1846. They were the first Pakeha to visit the Poutini Ngai Tahu settlements in Westland and to establish Mount Cook as New Zealand's highest mountain. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - C.C. Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: The Mackenzie Plains from near Haldon. From the centre background to the left is the Ohau River; the centre Ben Ohau; near the right Pukaki River. Mount Cook is the highest peak, just right of centre in the Southern Alps in the background. Also showing are Simons Hill, Marys Range, Tekapo River, Grays Hills, Mount Maggie (the isolated hill on the plains), Aiguilles (the needle rocks in the foreground) and Kirkliston Range (the hills in the right foreground from which the view is taken). Signed and titled in pencil below image. Date supplied by Dr R. Collins, 23/5/1985 (see also TL 3/1/1, 15/9/1983). Drawing possibly commissioned by Walter Black in 1872. This is suggested in a letter to the Library AT13/14/1 20 September 2002, from information supplied by descendants of Walter Black. Description: Shows a long view of the Southern Alps, seen from South Westland, with the peaks marked. Mt [Elie de] Beaumont and the Agassiz Glacier are on the left (above Franz Josef Glacier, which is not visible), followed by Mount De la Beche. Mount Cook is the tallest peak, roughly in the centre, the Hooker Range further to the right, Mount Hooker, the 'Gray Range' in the distance to the far right, ending in the sea.
