Salmon album 7

Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge. The last few images are exterior and interior views of the Dunedin Railway Station soon after it was finished in 1906. Inscriptions: Album page - John T. Description: Album belonging to T W (Thomas Watson) Brown. Scenes around New Zealand, many probably taken by Brown, some taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, and some of Lake Te Anau, Lake Wakatipu, and Milford Sound taken by FGR (Frederick George Radcliffe). The first part of the album is mainly images of tramping, camping and hunting in the Orongorongo Range and the Rimutakas, with some of the people identified, including Roley Neale and W A Neale (William Augustus Neale). Other sequences of images are a number in and around Lake Waikaremoana, including several of men fishing showing their catches; climbing in the Tongariro National Park area; views of the small towns Mohaka, Mataatua; areas around Titirangi, Kawau, Hamilton and Tauranga. Description: Album of photographs; many are contacts from 35mm film, some are prints, taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1943 and 1965. Consists mainly of trips, including camping trips, in the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand. Some are related to his zoological and botanical interests, including photographs of "vegetable sheep" (cushion plants that grow in New Zealand's mountain ranges (Raoulia australis)); and wetas. Others relate to his interest in photography. One trip shows members of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society at a camp at Dawson Falls (Mount Egmont); and another shows members of the Photographic Society of New Zealand attending a convention at Queenstown in 1956. Other - Photographer identified from Wise's Post Office Directory between 1905 and 1914, the only McDougall living anywhere near Lake Waikaremoana.A researcher has found a photograph by 'HH McDougall' who also lived in Napier at this time, so may possibly be the photographer.
