Description: Published by Whitcombe & Tombs, 1930. Presentation copy to James Cowan by H. E. Partridge with a dedication message to Cowan from Partridge tipped in to front of book, and loose papers which were laid into the book. These include photographs, clippings, correspondence, research notes, maps, and drafts. The photographs consist of eleven prints which include portraits of Hera Puna, Te Rauparaha, and Tamati Waka Nene. They also include one image of Mt Ngauruhoe erupting (with a group of people watching it [circa 1930s-1940s]), an image of the 'ceiling of Maori Church' in Otaki [Rangiatea] showing kōwhaiwhai, and another image featuring tukutuku and a poupou of Maui fishing up the North Island 'Te Ika a Maui'. Description: A self-drawn moko by an unknown Maori man, Possibly Te Whatanui, with the different parts of the design identified in Maori, e.g. 'Te ngu' for the upper nose area, 'te wha' for the chin area. The tattoo is for the nose, chin and cheek. In the background is a set of faint drawings by W. B. D. Mantell, including hands holding a plant. On the reverse are several pencil drawings by Mantell of Maori carvings, a whare or cottage, and a hut, inscribed 'Otaki 1844' 'Te Whatanui's whata, Ranginui, Otaki'. Description: Shows Tamihana Te Rauparaha's house, built in a combined Maori and European style with carved figures supporting the trellis around the front verandah, weather boards, and a shingled roof. The inside was also partially carved with tukutuku panels adorning the walls. Other dwellings, possibly built in the same style, beyond a fence in the background, trees and a hill. A young wisteria has been trained to climb the roof pole on the left of Tamihana's house. Description: Seven strips of coastal profile forming a more or less continous record of the appearance of the west coast of New Zealand from Taranaki south to Queen Charlotte Sound. Part of the view is taken from Entry (i.e. Kapiti) Island The work seems most likely to have been done in 1839 when Heaphy travelled up the west coast aboard the Tory. Exhibited: "Drawn from Nature: Europeans record New Zealand 1770 - 1860". Description: Shows a one-storey cottage with three windows and a door along the front. There is a path leading to the door, and flower beds on either side of the door. The house was Hadfield's first home, built 1849, and located 100 yards north of Rangiatea Church, under the hill. Copy of an earlier sketch 'Rev. Octavius Hadfield's cottage at Otaki, 1849', drawn for F.C. Hadfield by H.S. Hadfield from his father's description, not directly. (A reproduction in Mulgan, A.E. The city of the Strait. Wellington, 1939, attributes the earlier version to Anne Hadfield, but calls it a copy) The earlier sketch is privately owned and was also reproduced in Lethbridge, Chris. The wounded lion: Octavius Hadfield, 1814-1904 (Christchurch, 1993), p. 154, attributed to Anne Hadfield, daughter of Octavius Hadfield.
