Description: Mount Taranaki on the left in the distance. Two cottages in a clearing backed by tall trees in the middle ground, with fenced in gardens. In the foreground a field with sheep and cattle and hay being hauled on a cart by oxen. The artist is very likely to be Hannah Stephenson Smith who drew views of a later family home in Taranaki, and was also the sister of the author of the book in which this view appeared as the frontispiece. Description: A rough sketch with a view from Thorndon, looking towards Lambton Quay, and Te Aro, with Government House and its flagpole in the foreground, the waterfront (Lambton Quay) with several houses visible, Clay Point indicated and Mount Cook beyond it, with the Barracks. Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. Description: View of Dunedin in 1849 taken from a park-like foreground area with a man, a woman, and a child admiring the view, framed by trees, with the embryo town in the middle distance on the left, the harbour on the right and hills in the background. Based on a watercolour in the Hocken Library, completed 1849. The lithograph is considered to have been published approximately 1853. "Little Paisley" (the name is no longer current) was so named because it was a settlement of weavers, from Paisley. It was on the site of the present Southern Cemetery. Description: Single typescript page by an anonymous witness tells of seeing a man at a hotel in Waitati, 17 miles north of Dunedin. Because of his suspicions that the man was connected with a recent murder of a young couple named Dewar and their child, he advised the local policeman Charles Colborne, who telegrammed policeman Townsend of Waikouaiti.
