Description: Show Taranaki scenes: Interior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Exterior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Alpha flourmill, Huatoki Valley and Victoria Road from Marsland Hill, New Plymouth; Henui (Weekstown) from the coastal dunes; Unidentified New Plymouth outskirts (possibly now Tukapa St / Westown). Attribution based on style. George Curtis arrived in New Plymouth in 1849 on the 'Pekin'. "As soon as a raupo house could be erected by the Maoris at Omata, George Curtis and his family went to live on his farm". (NZ Biogs, 1967, vol. 1, p. 53). Supplied titles. Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library. This copy lacks a printed inscription on the recto of copy D-001-009 "Presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890" Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Pirongia Mountain in the left background and the volcanic cone of Kakepuku to the right. A line of trees in the middle distance, flax and low scrub in the foreground, with part of the fenceline of Rarowera Pā on the right (also known as Raroera Pā). Rarowera Pa was on what is now Wallace Terrace, about a mile from the centre of modern Te Awamutu Other Titles - Pirongia Kakepuku There is a similar drawing by Merrett in the Grey Album, British Library, Add. Description: A whare and trees in the left foreground, a canoe being rowed by three men on the lake in the centre and the White Terraces in the background, with clouds of steam above them. Probably one of the earliest depictions of the Terraces On the verso is a poem in the artist's hand, to his wife, Rangi Kawau (Rangi Koa), with marginal notes on the Maori words, in the hand of Edward Shortland. Inscriptions: Mount recto - beneath image - Title in ink in the artist's hand Compare two other version of this drawing by Merrett. One dating from 1842 is in the British Library's Grey Albums (Add. Ms 19953 f. 99, pl. 268) an ink and pencil drawing entitled 'Rotomahana, one of the Rotorua Lakes with a view of the hot springs and the ascent to it by natural steps of salyx'; also the Turnbull Library's A-089-008, an ink and wash sketch, almost identical to this one. Description: Shows Ensign Best (or Ernst Dieffenbach) on left with cap, Captain Symonds in cape. Te Waru's daughter is being denounced for murder. Te Waru is standing against a background of a carved memorial, holding his daughter by her arm. Other Maori men and women are seated in a group around Te Waru and his daughter. There is a pataka (storehouse) to the left and a gourd is being emptied onto a fire on the far right. Derived from a sketch by J.J. Merrett, made on a trip with Best, Symonds & Dieffenbach, 1841. Description: The left half of the page shows a wooden dwelling house thatched with raupo with a fence, a gateway, and an unusually long ridgepole. Below it is the end of another house (a cooking house) made of wood with a tekoteko (carved figurehead) at the top of its ridgepole. Both buildings are at Tu Kaitohe or Kaitoke Pa, Te Wherowhero's pa at the foot of Taupiri Mountain, Waikato The right side of the page shows at the top, two figures seated opposite one another and crying (the tangi or crying match). Below they are 'pressing noses' (hongi) and at the bottom of the page, they are hugging. Beside them is a sketch of a pole, three feet long, with white feathers 'wound into scarlet things'. Description: Five drawings on one page. From the top, 'Heke's first pah' shows Hone Heke's pa in the background, with Lake Omapere in the foreground, groups of Maori gathered. 'Landing a canoe' shows a long waka landing by pa pallisades to the right, with a volcanic peak in the background. Seated and standing men are in the canoe, and on land. Five rowers are waving oars in the air. The view of Tamaki shows a rolling landscape with a ridged volcanic peak in the background. 'Three seated Maori' have their cloaks wrapped around them.
