Description: Views of the Mangatarera Stream and Mount Holdsworth opens a record of a climb to the summit of Holdsworth. The party consists of six women and about five men. There are views of the stream and the swing bridge leading to the Holdsworth track; several shots of the Mountain House with the climbing party arranged along the veranda, and Mr McGregor's party who had arrived on horseback to fix the water tank; the climbing party grouped in the bush on the way up the mountain and on the open alpine ridges; a surveyors tent in the alpine tussock; the party eating beside the Holdsworth Trig; views of the Tararua Ranges from the summit of Mount Holdsworth. Interspersed among the main image groups are photographs of a trip to Rotorua. This involved a group of people in two motor cars. There are images of the Hamurana Stream and Springs at Rotorua, and of children diving for pennies at Whakarewarewa. Views of mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, the Mangaehuehu Stream, the Crater Lake and the crater on Ngauruhoe, and mountaineers crossing the ice field on Ruapehu and climbing Ngauruhoe. There is a view of Matterhorn Peak the name of which was changed to Girdlestone Peak in 1922. Two images of a surveyors' camp in the Waimarino Bush. The Tern Arch and Little Hawke's Crag on the Buller Gorge road. A view of Lake Tarawerea from the top of Mount Tarawera. The final photograph is a view along the beach to Pencarrow Head, Wellington. Pasted inside the front cover is a cutting from `The Weekly News', Wednesday, December 26, 1945, entitled `New Zealand's highest memorial' by JWG, describing the renaming in 1922, of Matterhorn Peak (Tongariro National Park) to Girdlestone Peak in honour of Hubert Earle Girdlestone after he was killed in action in August 1918. Description: Photographs taken by Charles Tenison Salmon about 1906 to 1909. Images include views of the Ohakune/Horopito Road, a Christmas camp in the bush at Ohakune, the volcanic eruption of Mount Ngauruhoe in April 1909, and views taken when traversing the Tongariro National Park. Some photographs show Charles and Marie Salmon in the bush, and one shows three climbers, Charles T. Salmon, Edward Phillips Turner and Hugh Girdlestone. Views on the Ohakune-Horopito Road show a team of horses pulling an empty dray, and one of a group of people waiting while their carriage crosses a ford on the Mangatoetoenui River. Description: Map of the area from the Waitama Stream, the Mataikona to Pakowai formed road and the Tinui River. Photocopy of what appears to be four topographic maps joined together, of Annadale Station. The boundaries of three blocks are heavily outlined and named Homestead, Middle and Tanawa. Land sections within the blocks are numbered with acreages. Boundaries of proposed subdivisions are marked and referred to in a key, as are old and new roads. Streams and rivers are named, relief features are described as is arable land use. Includes the site of Savage's homestead. An old whare is marked near the Pakowai Stream. Description: Photograph of a group at Bassett's Hut, Waiohine Valley, Tararua Ranges, taken Easter 1915 by Surveyor Hubert Earle Girdlestone. Group consists of Girdlestone's tramping companions Cyril Woods and George Moir, and two deer stalkers who had stayed with them in the hut on the previous night. Pack horse and gig in photograph belong to the stalkers. Tramping party was on two day trip from Greytown to Otaki via the Mount Hector track. Note on back of file print reads: "Basset's [sic] Hut with spur up which track commences (above the chimney)" Photographer Hubert Earle Girdlestone, Cyril Woods and George Moir undertook a tramp on the Mount Hector track in Easter 1915.
