Description: A collection of photographs of the Hunter family particularly of George Ernest Hunter and his wife and dogs at their home in Watt Street, Wadestown but also of his brother Robert Henry Hunter (the two men look very alike). They include a number of photographs of their house, garden and neighbourhood but also a postcard of Paekakariki beach, a postcard of two wagons with passengers passing through the Devil's Elbow between Buttermere and Keswick in the English Lake District, seven men with penny-farthing bicycles ca 1880, a carte de visite of four young Maori wearing kakahu taken by Swan & Wrigglesworth, and a photograph of a sketch of Porerua Bay near Wanganui (mid 19th century). The collection includes a letter to a Mr Ellingham from I W Macdonald of 8 Lower Watt Street, Wadestown offering him the photographs. Description: Collection consists of the papers of William Edward Hay; his wife, Mary Hay; his mother, also Mary Hay and his second son, Charles William Hay. Source of title - Supplied title William Edward and his wife, Mary Hay (nee Tindall) emigrated to Christchurch on the `Mermaid' in 1864. After eighteen months without steady work they moved to Hokitika where William tried his luck at the gold-diggings before taking up a permanent position with the `West Coast Times'. Late in 1871, the family moved to Melbourne but less than a year later they were back in New Zealand living in Dunedin, where William set up in business as a cabinet maker. In 1877, William's mother, Mary and eldest son, Benjamin, a dentist, came out to New Zealand. Shortly afterwards, William shifted to Auckland where he worked on the staff of the `Evening Post'. Description: New Zealand colonial treasurer Joe Ward is seen returning from the United Kingdom with a large suitcase containing the loan, while the Opposition members of parliament look on in consternation. Extended Title - The mission to England has been productive of wonderful results, notwithstanding the shadowing of the Opposition detective, and the persistent efforts of the Opposition leaders to damage the credit of the colony in London, and there is grief in the Tory camp. The Million and a Half Loan has been subscribed four-fold, and New Zealand securities were never so high in London. 'Don't you think, Mr Evening Roast', suggests the little doctor, 'that you have overdone those articles of yours. Have they not been too malignant - too vindictive?
