Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. Description: Photographs of yachts and yachting in the Wellington area. They include: yachts under construction or repair, a dry dock between two rows of boatsheds, the boatshed of the Brighton Power Boat Club, a yacht called the Igdrasil in the fiords, the Muratai in 1946, the Banika at Akaroa in 1948, the Hex leaving Wellington for the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, the Patari and Pacific at Purau, Lyttelton (taken by Allson Wright of Hereford Street, Christchurch), some men and women on the launch Tarepa ca 1940s, the Ludwig in 1925, and the Rawene in 1934. Also included are a photograph of a man working on an exhibit of a pa tuwatawata in the Dominion Museum with the maihi of a meeting house or pataka behind him and other carvings along the walls and a photograph of two men working in the taxidermy department with a variety of birds and bird skeletons on the table. Description: Information sheet has two sections. The top section relates to Maori canoes - tree-felling, hollowing out. Shows a mokihi or raft, a river canoe, war canoe and fishing canoe as well as a canoe bailer. Shows a reproduction of a picture of canoes at Gisborne in 1836, by Joel Samuel Polack. The lower section shows scenes of Maori warfare and weaponry, reproductions of pictures of war canoes, a haka, patu and other weapons (includes George French Angas' "Weapons and implements of war ; warriors preparing for a fight" 1847; his "War dance before the Pah of Oinemutu, near Rotorua Lake"; and J I McDonald's [Alarm in a Maori pa] 1906); a photograph of a model of a pa in the Dominion Museum, and a picture of the earthworks at Gate Pa. Description: Christmas card sent out by the Prime Minister's Office, Wellington, 1969-1970 showing the tableau based on Cook's own description of when he first set foot on New Zealand soil on 9 Oct 1769. It was built from photographs of the landing site at Poverty Bay as it appeared in 1969 and formed part of the Cook Bicentennial Exhibition prepared for display at the Dominion Museum, Wellington. Shows Cook and a fellow officer looking across a stretch of water to a pa site. In the foreground is the boat which bought him ashore, and accompanying soldiers and crew members. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows aspects of the thermal areas at Whakarewarewa and Waimangu, and scenes of Maori life. These include a group using a hot pool for cooking, a group of poi dancers, women weaving flax, a Maori carver at work with a group of tourists watching, a Maori warrior at the gate of a pa, and a group of women and children wearing a variety of Maori cloaks. The next set are from the Tarawera area, and include views of the Frying Pan Lake, Gibraltar Rock; three images copied from publications, one showing the White Terraces, and two showing the effects of the Tarawera eruption in 1886; a launch for hire on Lake Tarawera; and the entrance to the buried village at Te Wairoa. The last two views show the beach near Gisborne looking south, and looking down over Gisborne township from a hill. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
