Description: A view from the south end of Evans Bay looking north up the bay. To the right is part of Miramar Peninsula, with a hut and the mouth and exit structure of the tunnel built by the artist to drain the shallow lake at the lowest point of Miramar Peninsula. There are 3 small rowboats or canoes on the still water, and a further rowboat is pulled up on the shore to the right, in the middle distance. In the distance on the left are the hills of Roseneath and those to the west of the harbour (Khandallah) in the far distance. Glendavar was J C Crawford's cattle farm at the North end of Burnham water. The tunnel was cut by Mr Crawford to drain Burnham water into Evans Bay, and was the first tunnel made in N.Z. Description: Bridge over small stream in the foreground, a fenced in house with a tall gable and an outbuilding, with several trees in its garden in the middle ground, Mt Taranaki in the background See Recollections of Travel in New Zealand and Australia by J. C. Crawford, London, 1880, p. 86, where Crawford mentions visiting "the parsonage near the Waiwakaio" in the summer of 1847. The parsonage for St Mary's was at Te Henui, some two miles away from the church. It had half an acre of land with it. Its first occupant was William Bolland, who died on 29 May 1847, presumably shortly after Crawford's visit. Description: A shed-like house made of upright wooden slats, with an open door and two small windows at the near end. Outside the front door are two pigs. There is bush behind the house. The property was called Pihautea, at Kahutara, near Featherston Displayed in "Paradise" (Gifts to the nation), National Library Gallery, January - April 2005. A wood engraving version of this drawing was published in Crawford, J C. Travels in New Zealand and Australia. p. 83 This view may show the first property built on the Bidwill's farm. Description: View across a small lake (Burnham Water) on Miramar (originally Hataitai) Peninsula towards J C Crawford's "Glendavar" homestead nestled amongst the hills of Mount Crawford. Glendavar was J C Crawford's cattle farm at the north end of the lake, Burnham Water. The lake was drained by Crawford in 1858 to provide further land. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Kaiwharawhara stream and bridge in foreground; across the stream is a raupo hut and John Lodge's two-storeyed public house (also known as the Rainbow Hotel or Kaiwharawhara Hotel). The raupo whare is either one built for road-makers, or the immigration barracks built by Te Kaeaea (Taringa Kuri) to house Scottish colonists put ashore at Kaiwharawhara in December 1840. The area is shown before the 1855 earthquake, which raised the flat land in this part, and made the stream more shallow. The road up the hill on the near side of the stream is the Porirua Bridle Path, 6 feet wide. On the far side of the stream is the original Porirua coach road. (Information from Kapi-Mana news, Vol 23 no. 14, 10 March 1981, p. 22, by William Secker). Original deposited by on indefinite loan by Brigadier H N Crawford, August 1968. (See TL 2/56).
