Description: The cartoon is in three parts and shows a man representing the US and a man representing New Zealand. They are in a war and are in a bunker marked, ANZUS. In the first part the US says to NZ, well, if you know of a better whole, - go to it! In the second part NZ says to US, well, if you know of a better hole you go to it. In the third part they are both thinking to themselves, trouble is, I don't know of a better whole. Refers to The ANZUS treaty. Description: Shows three vignettes. In the first a disgruntled looking farmer is watching as armed forces personnel put up a barbed wire fence. The officer is telling him that the government is erecting barbed wire around the coastline. In the second a topdressing pilot is being told to drop bombs instead of fertiliser in the event of any hostilities. In the third an officer is standing on Mt Victoria in Wellington and telling his men that the old signal gun is to be turned around and pointed over Cook Strait. Some cartoons are specific to the Wellington region; there is reference to a cannon test and the Wellington Baker's Association (president H.E. Fariey). International issues are adressed. This includes an Indonesian police coup and the continuing problems that Britain faced in the aftermath of World War II. There is also an advertisement for the National Savings Bank. Quantity: 13.

Description: Two men, one from the Ministry of Defence, are discussing the country's defence strategy in the event that New Zealand is not part of the ANZUS alliance. New Zealand had put strain on the alliance by taking an anti-nuclear stand, which the U.S. could not adhere to. The two men are contemplating archaic defence methods including bows and arrows, 'non-nuclear missile launchers' and boiling oil. The reference to Marsden Point as the source of boiling oil refers to the constant shut-downs at the Marsden Point oil refinery. Description: The cartoon shows a tower with a flag reading, ANZUS, flying from the top. There are two windows on the tower. At the top one we can see Uncle Sam and in the one below we can see a man representing Australia. At the bottom of the tower is a door and someone can be seen trying to sneak out of it. The other two are watching it all from the windows. Refers to New Zealand's split from ANZUS. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Description: The cartoon shows two men wearing military uniforms, representing the US and Oz, standing with former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, who holds a piece of paper reading ANZUS. They are at a ship yard where they have just arranged for the conversion of four frigates, being built for New Zealand, to be switched to nuclear power. Refers to the decision of the New Zealand government to purchase four Australian made frigates for the New Zealand Navy.
