Description: Invitation card and programme, with handwritten name of addressee Hoani Te Heuheu. The front cover shows a photograph of the meeting house and an illustration of the Arawa canoe. Inside are illustrations of Tamatekapua the captain of the Arawa canoe entering the estuary of Maketu in the year 1340, and of Wahiao a celebrated chief of the Arawa people, with a whakapapa showing how he is descended from Tamatekapua. The back cover shows the programme, and a photograph of the late chief Mita Taupopoki. The invitation is issued by Te Aonui Dennan, H Tai Mitchell and the Tuhourangi and Wahiao tribes. Karere Maori papers

Description: These papers span folders 079 to 081. A note dated Apr 1918 in S P Smith's hand describes the contents as "Original papers supplied to the Govt paper `Karere Maori' in the fifties of last century - mostly in the writing of H A H Monro, native interpreter, Thos H Smith Asst Under Sec Native Dept, and others". The papers include both Maori and English versions of papers for publication. This volume contains drafts of articles, notices and advertisements dealing with market information, opinions about land transactions, the boundaries of various land blocks, Biblical texts and proclamations from the Governor; there is also a letter from Hawkes Bay Maori about the conflict between Te Hapuku and Te Moananui, promising that Pakeha will not be interfered with, and an account of the British colonisation of India and concerns about the effects on the Hindu and Muslim religions. Arrangement: According to Smith's note these papers also originally included letters to Donald McLean from Henry and William Halse and from John Rogan. Interview with Kuru Waaka

Description: Kuru Waaka talks about his mother, Ani Pareraututu Waaka, born 29 April 1874 and twelve years old at the time of the Tarawera eruption. Describes offers of help made to the survivors and their acceptance of an offer from the Ngati Maru people of Thames. Notes they lived in Thames for about ten years, making a living off kauri gum, before returning to Whakarewarewa and Tuhourangi who were a subtribe of Arawa. Ani married Te Rohu Waaka, also from Tarawera, who became a minister. Kuru Waaka talks about his twelve brothers and sisters, all born at the Whakarewarewa meeting house, between 1892 and 1924. Recalls the deaths of many from tuberculosis and describes himself as the youngest of the family. Describes Ani Waaka's role in starting off organisations in the village which saw to the welfare of the people. Describes how money paid by tourists into a trust fund was used to pay the rates and to improve housing. Talks about her awareness of the importance of the tourist industry economically, particularly during the Depression. Discusses her role in the Health League, later the Maori Women's Welfare League, of which she was the first President. Mentions Janet Fraser and Nurse Cameron. Recalls her involvement in the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Komiti Wahine and the Arawa Maori Trust Board. Talks about his sister, Nini Naera, a mission worker attached to the mission house at Ruatoki who had also been a teacher at Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls College. Describes her importance in the Maori Women's Welfare League. Mentions Rangi Royal, the first Maori welfare officer in the Arawa district. Wellington: Huia Publishers. 2002. Pages 153-156. Cowan has written "For notes, translation see Rotorua & Kawhia notebook". Also contains "He haka pao" by Makareti and Ataraiti.
