Description: Arranged in four parts this journal explores the history and whakapapa of the Ngati Toa people. It includes detailed whakapapa from Marangaiparoa, son of Toa Rangatira, with a special emphasis on the relationships between Ngati Toa and other closely related Kawhia tribes. The manuscript also details the migration of the Tainui and Te Arawa canoes to Aotearoa, with accompanying karakia; Purakau, or short historical narratives, about numerous Ngati Toa tupuna (ancestors); The migrations of the Ngati Toa tribes from Kawhia to the Kapiti district; And an examination of Maori theological concepts, and includes a discussion about the descent of the Maori people from Adam and Eve. Also records the baptism of various people into the Mormon church at Takapuwahia pa, Porirua, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Publication - This manuscript may be the original source material used by Sir Maui Pomare for the book "Legends of the Maori", 2 volumes [1930]. Description: Jean Andrews was born in Otaki on 23 October 1914. Gives details of her family, particularly her mother, her Te Ati Awa background and childhood in Otaki. Describes use of Maori medicine and family values. Talks about shift to Paekakariki on to land that is now Queen Elizabeth Park. Describes mother's negotiations with the Government over this land and being told that if they did not sell the land it would be taken under proclamation. Talks about the Maori Battalion being based in Palmerston North during World War II and the American Marines stationed around Paekakariki. Notes that at one point there were 26,000 Marines in the area. Describes at length their family's close and ongoing association with these soldiers many of whom were welcomed in to the family home. Describes entertainment of the troops by Ngati Poneke. Relates how her mother did washing for American soldiers and family members cleaned the Liberty trains. Comments on relationships, including sexual relationships, between local women and soldiers, lack of contraception and her ongoing role in helping children find their American fathers. Recalls the collision of transport ships in a storm off Mana Island which resulted in 103 soldiers being drowned. Talks about the kindness of most of the American soldiers, the racism of a few and a brawl that broke out between members of the Maori Battalion and American soldiers. Talks about pilgrimages made back to the area by many Marines. Talk about her six daughters and one son, her involvement in kohanga reo and teaching korowai. Describes her welfare work with Social Welfare and the Probation Department and briefly mentions her QSM. Description: Contains letters from Maori to Governor Grey with regard to land tenure (reservations, subdivisions, payments, and warnings about false claims), and with regard to mail delivery during the time of the New Zealand wars; also contains a lengthy letter to Grey from the Wairarapa Runanga repudiating a land sale by Wi Kingi Tutepakihirangi because he was not an owner of the land that was sold; letter confirming arrangements between Grey and Te Runanga o Ngati Toa, acknowledges his authority and expects Grey to honour their agreement (?). Includes letter from Horomona Pohio requesting financial assistance to build a church, which would double as a school, for the people of Ngati Huirapa and the education of their youth. Includes letter from Ropata Hururmutu informing the Governor that Ngati Toa retain the authority relating to Motuhara, Hongoeka & Haukopua (lands about Plimmerton), some of which are leased to Mr Levy, on behalf of their children; letter from the Muaupoko elder Te Rangirurupuni to Governor Grey about letters requesting payment from Ngati Toa for their lands; and letter from Tamaihengia requesting formal recognition by Grey of the Ngati Toa "Runanga". letter from "Nga Runanga e rua o Whangaehu me Mangawero", by the Ngati Apa, requesting the Governor Grey should come and visit them.
