By: Mitchell, Owen Cecil, 1904-1971

Description: Contains photograph album, loose prints, and negatives of images taken on the Chatham Islands between circa 1900 to 1930s, with most images taken in circa 1920s. Local photographer and farmer Owen Cecil Mitchell created the negatives, most likely compiled the album, and stamped the backs of many of the prints, in ink, with his name. A few prints are identified on the backs and some have corresponding negatives. Numerous negatives do not have corresponding prints and some later images may show scenes in Christchurch. - Photographs chiefly illustrate life on the Chatham Islands, including portraits of individuals and groups and community events and industry (mainly sheep farming). Landscapes, wildlife, flora, and buildings are also covered. - The collection contains images of men holding human bones, mainly in a beach setting.
