Description: Interview with John Nysse, born in the Netherlands in 1929, and his wife Winnie (Uinise) Nysse, born in Tonga in 1951. John talks about coming to New Zealand in 1951, and working in the public sector as a records officer. Winnie mentions being brought to New Zealand in 1979 by her father and brother. Refer to their meeting at a bus station, and marrying in 1992 following Tongan and Catholic traditions. Talk about living in Thorndon for a time, and applying for a state house to get away from the motorway. Discuss their house (12 Fife Lane, Miramar) which was the first state house built in 1937, and feeling lucky to have it. Talk about the solid design of the house, its layout and it being sunny. Refer to the house as being right for a family, and discuss the garden where they grow vegetables and fruit. Mention financial hardship during the period of market rents and needing additional support from Income Support. Discuss being older parents, and recreational activities with their daughters. Comment on the 60th anniversary of the house when they were visited by prime minister Helen Clarke and housing minister Annette King. Franks photographic prints of family and war service

Description: Photographic prints relating to Cecil and Eunice Frank's family life in Wellington and Franks' service in the Pacific during World War II, circa 1940s. Most photographs most likely taken by Franks. - Family photographs feature a series at [family?] house in Miramar. These show Cecil, Eunice, and another man in the vegetable garden. Wider shots in this series show the house and garden amidst other houses on the hills above Miramar [Moa Point?] and one image is a view over Lyall Bay to Cook Strait. Many images of gardening and Miramar house have corresponding negatives. There are also images of Eunice in the garden and in a living room holding a baby; in some images the baby is wearing a [christening?] gown. Further images of Eunice show her playing golf and wearing a RNZAF blazer. There are two images of Cecil playing cricket and one of him playing tennis [these are possibly taken overseas during the war]. - Print collection also includes a coast scene [possibly Wellington?] and another of city street under snow [Christchurch?]. - Images relating to Franks's war service include: RNZAF troops marching through Hagley Park, Christchurch, in the morning; troopship 'Empire Star' docked in Lyttelton (1939); Noumea scenes, including Franks in front of the officers' quarters at Camp Barnes with Lieutenant Summers of the United States Army (Jan 1943), at his beach tent, and in front of an unidentified wooden building. - Also contains three group portraits of RNZAF officers and airmen participating in the first (Jan 1940), third, and fourth (6 Apr 1940) instalments of the 'War Course - Technical Wing' course taught by Franks at Wigram Airbase. These prints have been de-framed and are mounted on board. The third course image has the signatures of the men and the fourth the printed names each individual in the photograph; both were presented to Franks. Further group portraits show the Wellington Methodist Harriers and an unidentified scene with a woman on a throne dressed like a queen, including soldiers with bayonets drawn [theatre production?]. - Some prints have Franks's annotations on the back. Includes harbour swim event at Evans Bay, 26 February 1950; speedboat contests at Evans Bay, 4 March 1950; Patent slip and the Union Steam Ship Co's wharf at Evans Bay; tulip Sunday at the Wellington Botanic Garden (15 October 1950); Evans Bay Yacht Club yard in use as a temporary base for Solent flying boats with the Ararangi at a mooring; various views of reclamation undertaken by TEAL for their flying boat service at Evans Bay, and flying boats. Many of the images in this album are linked with Evans Bay, as Adkin was living at 424 Evans Bay Parade in the 1950s, several images showing the house. Views of Wellington from the Mount Victoria lookout and from the Tinakori Ridge Radio Station, in 1952; the old Robert Hannah residence in Boulcott Street; views of the inner city including the upper end of Ghuznee St., Upper Willis St., the Children's Dental Clinic. Image no. 313 shows a house at 214 Upper Willis Street (known as Restwyn), taken in Feb 1953, while image no. 434 shows the same site in January 1957 after the house had been demolished. Numbers of images show preparations and decorations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. There are many photographs of preparation for extending the airport at Rongotai, showing Moa Point Hill in course of destruction to provide spoil for reclamation, and also Rongotai Ridge, with one view of a house being moved from the ridge, also showing development of the breakwater at Moa Point, all taken betwen 1953 and 1957. A 1954 image shows an extension to the Town Hall under construction for municipal offices in December 1953; the Hinemoa at No. 1 Ferry Wharf; preparations and decorations for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in December 1953, including decorations at the Railway Station, Defence Stores Building in Featherston St., Kirkcaldie & Stains, James Smiths Corner, DIC, and the GPO. Image taken in March 1956 shows a house with turret on the corner of Upper Willis St and Aro St (a house which was shown in CD Barraud's painting of 1877). Views of yachting in the harbour, Ward Island, and the Eastbourne seawall. Outcast yacht is pictured.
