Description: The bulk of the collection comprises diaries, notebooks, correspondence and papers of James Coutts Crawford, 1817-1889 and correspondence with his sons H D, A D, C J, and J D Crawford who held a diplomatic post in China, and daughter Janet Willis. James Coutts Crawford's papers cover his naval career, sojourn in Australia, farming and development of land purchased at Miramar (Wellington) and service as Provincial Geologist. The papers reflect his interest in natural history, agriculture and mining. Early material was used in `Recollections of Travel in Australia and New Zealand' published in 1880. The papers of his sons deal with the development of the Miramar Estate and sheep farming. Arrangement: This collection is arranged so that the papers of James Coutts Crawford and each member of his family are self-contained as far as possible. The outward correspondence to members of the immediate family is collected under the writer while inward correspondence is confined to letters from extended family members and other writers. Description: Photostat of Visscher's Chart from the Huydecoper MS., in the Mitchell Library, Sydney. This is a hydrographic chart drawn by Visscher who was the Chief Navigator to Abel Tasman in 1642-3. It outlines the west coast of the North Island, and down the top of the west South Island. The map shows the ships's track along the coastline. Some placenames are shown, in Dutch. Quantity: 3 map(s). Description: Arranged in four parts this journal explores the history and whakapapa of the Ngati Toa people. It includes detailed whakapapa from Marangaiparoa, son of Toa Rangatira, with a special emphasis on the relationships between Ngati Toa and other closely related Kawhia tribes. The manuscript also details the migration of the Tainui and Te Arawa canoes to Aotearoa, with accompanying karakia; Purakau, or short historical narratives, about numerous Ngati Toa tupuna (ancestors); The migrations of the Ngati Toa tribes from Kawhia to the Kapiti district; And an examination of Maori theological concepts, and includes a discussion about the descent of the Maori people from Adam and Eve. Also records the baptism of various people into the Mormon church at Takapuwahia pa, Porirua, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Publication - This manuscript may be the original source material used by Sir Maui Pomare for the book "Legends of the Maori", 2 volumes [1930]. Description: Two maps on one sheet. The top map is a fascimile of the chart of New Zealand leg of Abel Tasman's voyage, 1642-1643, reproduced from a copy of the journal of the voyages held at the General State Archives in Hague. The bottom map then compares Tasman's route plotted relative to New Zealand's coastline as it is known today. The map translates the original into English, plots the charted path and adds the dates at given points along the journey. It includes some quotes from Tasman's diary as well as some of the events. The route interpretation along the western shoreline has been researched and compiled by Mr Grahame Anderson. The names on the original chart have been translated and shown on this map in italic script to enable natural features to be compared with those on the chart. Some additional features named subsequent to Tasman's voyage are shown in smaller text to aid identification of the coastline. The Department of Survey and Land Information, in association with the New Zealand Abel Tasman 1992 Commission commemorates Tasman's voyage with this specially drawn present day map.
