Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Since April 2009, Doyle's cartoons have been regularly published on the Wellington-based Scoop website, www.scoop.co.nz Part of the NZ Cartoon Archive Martin Doyle (born 1956) is a self-taught artist who lives in Wellington, New Zealand. His visual work has appeared for several years on the Scoop news website, Salient, and Capital Times. As at 2018, his work was appearing sporadically on Scoop.co.nz, as well as on his own Facebook page. He has also worked as a writer for both radio and television and holds a Masters degree in Public Policy.

The second frame shows a close up of the trunks of forest trees with a sinister figure disappearing into the gloom; it includes text that reads 'Five hundred elderly are trapped in a hall, it can't wait...' The third frame shows Winston Peters making a speech; text reads 'With some difficulty, they give it a rousing standing ovation... and he says 'I'm back, and I'm still angry...' Winston Peters served as Minister of Maori Affairs in the Bolger National Party Government before being sacked in 1991 and losing party endorsement for his Tauranga seat. He returned to Parliament in 1993 as an independent, after defeating Gail McIntosh National MP for Lyttelton and then formed his own party, New Zealand First in July, shortly before the 1993 election when he kept his Tauranga seat as an independent, to be greeted by his elderly devotees, after he was sacked by the National Party and after he won the bye-election but before the launch of NZ First in July.
