He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: Hand-drawn map of the area from Taumarunui following the main trunk line and the Ongarue River northwards to Mangeokewa River to the Waikato River and Waihaha River to Waituhi. Creeks, streams and rivers are named, some marked in blue. Watersheds of the Mokau, Wanganui and Waikato Rivers are prominently marked as are land blocks and mountain peaks which include height in feet. Lines of the Taringamotu Company's Tram and the Mangapehe Tram are drawn and the map includes many references to tram formations. Directions with mileages are given to Lake Taupo. Description: A cadastral map of rural lands open for selection on lease in perpetuity, of the area from the Te Awaroa River to the Wai-inumia Stream, including the Kawhia-Alexandra Road. This base map has numbered sections, some have been coloured, and include acreages, owners' names and dates handwritten in each section. A small map, named Kawhia North S.D., mounted at the top left of the main map, is of sections 5 and 7 which are adjacent to the Awaroa River and one and a half miles to the Hauturu P.O. Includes one owners' name, acreage and a mounted cutting about section 5 and handwritten information including the poster number and date. A second cutting about section 3 is mounted on the bottom left of the main map and includes the relevant poster number and date. The map on the reverse has some sections outlined in red with a prominent note stating 'Superseded. See map on face'. The base maps are of sections in the Kawhia County. Auckland land district No. 753. A schedule of the second class land is referred to in a key. The map includes directions to the nearby settlement of Kawhia, and the vegetation and terrain are named. Existing huts are marked in green and named as Salt Hut, Aorangi Hut, R.S.C. Hut, Glacier Hut. Proposed huts are marked in red and named as Tongariro Hut, R.S.C. Memorial Hut, A.S.C. Hut, while Otaihare Hut has been crossed through. Sites of other huts are marked in black ink and named as Alpine Hut, T.T.C. site, Otaihape Hut, A.S.C. Hut and M.T.C. Hut. Description: The journal covers the period Sept 1869 to March 1872. It describes the breaking in and development of the Gubbins brothers' farm and comments on pioneering life in the Waikato. Part 2, p 17, 18 and part of p 28 are missing. It appears to have been transcribed in 1974 by E McDonald who also provides an introduction to the journal entitled `Mr Gubbins comes to Auckland in 1869 and buys a farm in the Waikato',which gives biographical details about Arthur Gubbins. Publication - Published in Auckland-Waikato Historical journal, nos 24, 25, 27 (Apr, Oct 1974, Oct 1975) Source of title - supplied title Gubbins and his brother Evans emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand and took up land at Ohaupo, south of Hamilton, in 1869. Description: Base maps of rural lands open for sale or occupation with right of purchase, or for renewable lease, in terms of the Land Act, 1908, in the Wharepapa Survey District, West Taupo County and in the Waipoua Survey District in the Hokianga County. The boundaries of farm blocks in the Wharepapa Survey District, Sections 1, 6,7, 11-24, are prominently outlined, the majority include owners' names and applicable dates handwritten in each section. A scenic reserve, domain and recreation reserve, hospital reserve, cemetery and creamery sites, and the Puniu, Waipari and Mangaharakeke Streams are marked. The roadman's paddock, the school site and temporary reserve have Gazetteer numbers. Brief descriptions of the terrain and vegetation are included. The base map of the Waipoua Survey District has two cuttings about land in the Wharepapa Survey District mounted over the top of it. The first cutting has '1393, 25-7-21, cash or D.P.' written adjacent to it while the second cutting has '1406, 23 & 25-1-2l, for general application' The main base map is of farm sections in the Wharepapa survey district, 15 miles from Kawa Railway station in the West Taupo County, Auckland Land District No. 1195. The second base map is of farm sections in the Waipoua Survey District, 8 miles from Kaihu, in the Hokianga County. A schedule of these districts include the valuations, acreages and rent. Description: Maps and tracings of land features and various archaeological finds, including numerous Maori artefacts (usually made from either bone or wood, but includes some human remains), from around NZ but mostly from the Horowhenua district. Examples are a whale club (patu paraoa) found at Horowhenua, and a whale bone comb (heru paraoa) found at Waikanae.
