Description: Six-panelled account of the popularity of dolphin Pelorus Jack in Pelorus Sound in the 1890s (until 1912) and of the dolphin Opo at Opononi in Northland in 1956. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 330 x 565 mm. Description: Sheila Hogben's album of holiday photographs. The first holiday taken during the Christmas break, 1939-1940, included six girls camping at Waiau Pa, Manukau Harbour. The six girls with their bicycles ready to leave on their trip. Shots of the girls at their camp with two men, Charlie and Arthur. The rest of the photographs are mainly shots of the girls at tennis, at the beach, and in the pastoral landscape of the farm where they were camping. The second holiday was a tour of Northland made in January 1941. This time a group of four girls set out with their bicycles loaded down with camping gear. They also travelled by hitching rides on trucks and they are seen on their first lift on the back of a truck with their bicycles. Group photographs in bathing togs on the beach at Tikinui. Two girls swimming with two men in Three Chain Lake. The girls with the Meredith family, Glink's Gully. In Trounson Park Kauri Reserve and Waipoua Forest. Swimming at Waimamaku. Outside their tents at Opononi. On Ferguson's Estate, Kaikohi. Views of buildings at Waitangi. The stone church at Paihia. Views of the Bay of Islands. Description: Items originally in a box Binney labelled 'Prophet photos' Chiefly photographs of Maori grave markers in the Far North district (but also some in Otaki, Onehunga, Matata and Whangara) taken in 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1983 by Kendrick Smithyman. Many show the symbols of the heart, diamond, club and spade and some, or all, of these, may be the work of carver Nutana Mapi. Also a few Pakeha graves. Also includes photographs of other subjects taken by Smithyman: a drawing by Eric Lee-Johnson of a carved wooden grave marker at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Otago University; a carved wooden altar piece in a church at Motukaraka. Also includes a photograph of Penetana Papahurihia's grave marker taken by historian Ruth Miriam Ross in 1972, and an accompanying letter from Ross to Judith, dated about 1976, noting the inscription on the stone and further details. Also a photograph of a grave marker labelled "ex R S Oppenheim A 'House of the Lord', late (1950s) in a Ratana context, Matauri Bay" Also includes a photograph of the exterior of the Ratana Church at Mangamuka, Far North, taken by Binney in circa 1970s.
